Sorry Dannyboy - think you misunderstood me. I agree with you on the foreign object theory all the way.
My wager is that I think the foreign object that got in there was the washer of this manifold stud.... as you cant get at it with your fingers once the nut is off, when removing the manifold.
And my guess is the mechanic left it on there, forgot about it & when the manifold was pulled off - that washer fell straight into the inlet manifold
All the talk about pistons & bores was just me and my weird fetish of seeing damamged bits

Im having a shocker this week.....wrote a great big reply to a post last night, only to find I was on a complete tangent that really didnt have anything to do with the original issue
I think its time for a beer.... Then again, that may be the problem
The workshop owes you a new engine, you will probably have to take them to consumer protection. Maybe they workshop owner will come to the party when presented with the facts and that you are going to consumer protection.
omg....now u tell me...im just about to go check out some new engines....
but it was a good job of u did....
what do i do now ???.....i really feel bad saying this stuff to the workshop...
is there any more obvious proof i can say for someone else to understand ?....
am i asking too much quesions...its the 6th page now?...
Well heres come the hard part now, its really your words against his. Like i said on page 2, he stated that, you were told two washer was missing on the manifold before work.
And you said you didn't remember he said anything like that. So its going to be a pretty tough one to proof whether is Alex or the previous guy or someone else......

However if things start to go pear shaped and you're not happy with the resolution of the events, consider contacting Consumer Affairs. They have a fund that will cover you for up to $40k for financial loss through a motor trader.
Don't feel bad about considering this path. That's what it's there for, to protect consumers. My gf had to use the equivalent body in NSW when some hassles came up with mechanics here. Without them she would have got nowhere.
what you need to do is get as much information as you can from what you already know, or from learninng and taking advice from the people here (or elsewhere) and then seek legal advice.
You really need the car ' visually ' assessed by an outside party - peoples comments from here wont help you from a legal perspective.
Euro is correct, from a legal point of view, you need hard evidence that proof his or the workshop had causes this problem.
We can only help & guide you as much as we can, but at the end of the day, what we wrote here will not stand a chance in any legal system, as anyone can write anything in a public forum, plus none of us had actually witness the issue from the start.
If the old work shop that you took to are willing write a full report stated all the parts that are damaged was in tip top condition before you took it in, then you might stand a chance, other then that, like I said, its your words against his.

going back about 20 replies I've never seen this kind of damage before..mind u I havn't looked at that many engines this is one good reason to have your tappets adjusted so if there are any funny sounds u should be able to pick them up....I'm suprised the car was running ok...I mean one cylinder must have been doing some wierd stuff on the compression stroke and also when the exhaust valve opened..
