ok i took the car into the workshop 2 and half weeks ago...its been there since.....
the car was working well....and i was only going to get a major service on my fto....since the 10000k is up....
and the service include spark plugs, timingbelt, oil, other oils....
and what happens next was a killer......
the car started to have a huge noise when engin started...it sounds like a stick in the engin and snaping one every second.....so it sounds like "KAK kAK KAK".... and its an on and off thing...
then the next thing started playing up is the idel control....(which i just changed about 6 months ago....)
do u think this is just because its getting old ? or.....what ?
who should be resposibe for this.... ?.....
help me....

Cause u live in Vic, & BigKev is excited about everything in Vic.
Because i just remember Alex called me around the same time you had your problem, (damit i forgot to return his call cause i've been flat out pass 2 wks ) & its usually if he had a problem with a FTO, he rings me.
I give him a call & try to find out whats going on, now from this post topic, i gather his saying this isn't his problem?

well if you use oil thats too thin the tapping noise can get heaps louder than normal... as long as the timing for them is perfect i wouldnt think theres engine damage going on but dont quote me
idle motor.... if you replaced the old one 6 months ago with another 2nd hand one, throw it out and get a new one from the factory made of ceramic materical so they not so suceptible to fail due to heat of the engine.
im guessing if he left it idling and revved it a bit looking for what the tapping noise was that might have overheated the idle control motor making it fail......
annnd if you have an auto make sure he used proper mitsu oil otherwise u might have some problems with that too!
Did the machanic do the work start the car it was fine, gave it to you and it did it? Or did he do the service and he started the car and it started making the noise?
I don't think it something as simple as the oil, unless it's missing most of it. What kind of noise is it? It it fairly loud?
What he's describing sounds *much* more serious then noisy engine tappets. I'd assume this mech having worked on FTO's before would know what the tappet sound was.
Firstly, for gods sake stop starting/driving your car! If your engine is making noises like that something must have gone awry.
Is the engine light coming on? Have you checked the ECU for error codes? Were the correct sparkplugs used (they're different for GR and GPX)? It sounds like the engine is hunting (idle going up and down), is that the case? Do you have a GR or GPX?
In the case of GR what has happened in all likelyhood is that your air meter (near the airintake box) is disconnected, or not connected properly. This makes the car idle crazily and it sounds like its about to explode every few seconds. The solution for this is just pushing in the connector (can't miss it, attaches directly to the AFM).
Ok i just got off the phone with Alex, & its definately not the tappet, he said its something flowing between the head & piston.
He even told me the parts number his using & it sounds right
10-30w engine oil
BKR6EIX-11 Iridium spark plugs
Poster did the previous guy who serviced your FTO use any engine addictive?

its 1995 FTO GPX manual
dont worry guys i didnt take the car out since it happend...its still in there
the massive noise comes on and off just whenever it wants to....and the motor is not keeping up the ideling and stoles .....and this is only when siting in the workshop reving....
all this happen while in the workshop .i did not take the car out at all in the 2 weeks
and im sure he used the right tools for example the spark plugs, oil etc....
the engine oil i used last time was "2000 Multigrade Motul SAE 20W50 "
and nothing else!....might of been too thick for it....
i went had a chat with Alex today after Kev called......well i still dont know what to do.....
thinking to get my FTO into another workshop and hope they can tell me what is going on....

I go have a chat with Lee tomorrow & see what he think of it, but by what Alex told me, your engine need to be stripped.

I got to say Poster, your car is pretty famous among few mechanics, apparetly Lee saw your car while he was dropping by to see his other mechanic mate Andrew, who happen to suppling parts to Alex. (So complicated)
Lee had a quick look at your car when it was having the timing belt fitted & suspected that the timing belt wasn't fitted properly & causing a piston problem. He won't able to know until he have a proper look either.
Now i try to find the other mechanic (Andrew) who supplied the parts & see what he think about all this.

Spose it depends if you've clipped a valve with the piston... always a chance when the belt is put on wrong. Even out by a notch on any of the 4 cams pulleys can cause a damaging timing overlap on a motor as high strung as an FTO.... hate to think if more than one of the pulleys is out by a notch *shudders*

i think andrew is the person who came on wednesday afternoon to MJ motors and took a look...
i think what he said was to not touch tappets on fto again or somthing like that....
but yes please have a talk to Lee and Andrew for me....will really need your help....
and yes Alex is reconmented that i need to strip parts of the engine to see what the problem is...
