Bottom of engine/gearbox knocking against cross member
Happy new years all!
Ever since I swapped the engine & sub-frame between GP & GPX, I can hear (& feel) this ‘clunk’ every time I change gear. Both car didn’t have this issue pre-transplant.
Changed all four engine mounts but it’s still there.
My mechanic lifted the car up on the hoist and got me to change gears with him observing from underneath. He noticed that there was about 1cm clearance between underside of the engine and the cross member that runs front to back (see photos. Couldn’t find good FTO underbody image but see underbody of mirage that shows the similar cross member).
Has anyone had similar experience? or have advice on this??
plus, can you guys do me a huge favour and take a photo of the clearance of your FTOs?
Thanks guys! Looking forward to seeing yous at the bonfire! (organising money and work leave atm)

Re: engine / gearbox knocking against cross member
I have nothing useful to add except that I've been told the engine is pretty close to the cross member even with good mounts.
Was there any actual contact with the cross member observed though?

That doesn't look like a Mirage underside, but also worn out engine mounts cause such issues, potentially subframe mounts too I believe

If it's moving that much your mounts are worn. Did you replace them with brand new ones?

Re: Bottom of engine/gearbox knocking against cross member
yup all 4 engine mounts are replaced to new.
the gaps is like 10-15mm at the most. is you guys' ones like that too?
had no idea sub-frames had a mount
Whats involved in changing sub frame mount? would this be as easy as engine mount?

http://www.spmotor.co.uk/mitsubishi-fto-transmission (See screenshot attached)
this website suggest transmissions with LSD needs special gear oil..
I know my mechanic just chucked in generic ones in there. Seeing the sub model of the car they wouldnt have known I swapped the transmission from GPvR..
Can anyone please shed light on which exact oil I need?
Cheers!!

Pretty sure the GPvR helical diff just takes standard oil. No fancy stuff required.

Re: Bottom of engine/gearbox knocking against cross member
hm.. thanks for that. I might bring it down to the bonfire for you guys to check out..
So far I have 2 different mechanics (one who did the engine swap) turned me away because they can't find whats wrong with it!

Re: Bottom of engine/gearbox knocking against cross member
One possible suggestion, the cross member mounts to the chassis with 4 bolts. There are rubber spacers on one or both sides (I don't remember) of the cross member on all 4 bolts, if they were left off, you may end up in a situation where the cross member is up too high and may hit something.
Me? Bitter? f**k no. I think it's hilarious.

Now that sounds like a high possibility .Dras wrote:One possible suggestion, the cross member mounts to the chassis with 4 bolts. Dartboard says bolt through the front mount (with the larger diameter sleeve) hasn't been nipped up properly.

Re: Bottom of engine/gearbox knocking against cross member
took it back to the shop where they did the engine swap.
the guys put a stopper mounting flashing by the rear engine mount.. (charged 180 bucks! meh..) the knocking is still there.
Feels awfully like worn out engine mount. (though I got them all replaced..)
Just for the sanity check, how many engine mounts are there? is there any other mounts that could potentially be worn out to cause this knock?
plus,, ignition coils are burnt and causing miss fire..
I had the spare ones from the spare engine but I threw them away last week hahahahahah sh*t.
Does anyone have one in good nick?
Thanks guys!

Re: Bottom of engine/gearbox knocking against cross member
allright, the mechanic suggested changing out the whole engine mount as it's an aftermarket one and might be the source of the problem...
Does anyone have the genuine engine mount for sale? I need the one that sits on top of the gear box and just below the battery?
Happy to meet you at the bonfire for exchange. let me know!

Maybe just wait till the bonfire when one of us can actually diagnose the problem for you. You're putting your mechanic's kids through college here.
