I was close to buying 2 separate ones here with blown Head Gaskets.... definitely not uncommon, I made sure to check my current one on the test drive we took it on.

If the gaskets weren't so f**king expensive, I'd be tempted to repair rather than replace the engine.

I bought a full VRS kit for the Mini last week, including head gasket + all the rubber seal bits & it cost me $45 bucks!!

It will take way longer to change an engine than to change a head gasket?? So pointless changing the engine? Yep helps to change it yourself!

Yeah but then you got a Kinder surprise 2nd hand engine that's done 'low kms'

I prefer piece of mind, even if there's more work involved.

Removing an engine less work than head gasket?

Can you imagine a mitsubishi engine sitting there not started for so long?? Mitsubishi's tend to sludge from sitting there for too long. Can't imagine one sitting in a wrecking yard!

What if you spend all that cash on a replacement engine and it's head gasket blows or something worse happens with it?
The engine number wont match the original factory lists anymore. My FTO has all matching numbers/colour/gearbox/model as when new.

Most wreckers offer a 3 month warranty. They never even test the motors as usually the cars have been in a crash. You are basically getting a motor that hasn't been tested and if it fails you rip it out and they give you a new one. So all that labour for nothing.

I can't see it costing more than a $1000 labour wise to change a head gasket? 5 hours timing belt off and on, heads 3 hours off and on??? Think I'm being generous on those hours too?
