Blown Head Gasket

Post by InitialG »

Hi guys,

Looks like my FTO has a blown head gasket. :(

My mechanic says I have 2 choices, either to fix it or do an engine swap?

Apparently it will be cheaper just to do an engine swap.

Just wondering what you guys would do if you were in my position.

Cheers,
G

I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

2. 2007 Peugeot 307 TDi (more fun than you'd expect)
3. 2009 Mitsubishi Triton Di-D (a monster in its own right)
4. 1992 Nissan NX Coupe (club car and project car)
5. 1996 Holden SB Barina - "The Nugget"
6. 1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee Sport - The Budget Build
7. 2010 Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series - V8 Goodness... - Build coming soon.
8. 1990 Audi 90 manual - The delightfully dignified daily driver

f**k your life

I've faced that in a previous car before... Engine swap's just the ideal thing, no if's or but's about it.

Yep, either slap in another mivec or fork out a little and go for something more exotic.

If you go the engine swap then i might be interested in the engine, would be a good project - what is the average freight for an engine from Sydney to Brissie?

I have had a few blown head gaskets in other cars and I have always fixed it. Some have needed re-valving and shaving, and some have just blown between 2 pots and needed the gasket replaced. If it was my engine I would repair it myself, and have the opportunity to rebuild the top end in the process. But thats just me.

Problem is, you can pick up another engine for not much more than the cost of the gaskets. and that is not including the shaving/other tasks required to fix the existing one.And if you do it yourself and dont get it right, thats another set of gaskets....

I think that the only time you would fix an FTO engine with a blown head gasket is if you were going to do internal work at the same time.

Ive been looking for a motor that's in the budget range.. Most seems to want 1.2k for one with either unknown km or "80000km"

Someone said that our engine shouldn't cost more than 800

$700 for one with 130K on the clock. You may have to help remove it as its still running in the car atm. Im dismantling the ute. Got the engine from ichibahn and its done about 500 metres (1/2 km) since I bought it (driven out of shed 5 or 6 times and onto creek flat once). Nothing wrong with it at all, although IMO it would be worth doing the belts before you put it back in. Oh and id be removing a few ancillaries off the engine (alternator, A/C condensor etc) for that price

How did the mechanic determine you have a head gasket leak?

The Mitsubishi V6's are good on those, I've only seen one and that was on a car that was run into the ground.
