noise when air con is on

Post by bushido »

what needs replacing if when i have my air con on and i stop at lights for a while, the take off and a sound like a stuffed up belt or pulley appears? Only happens when the air con button is pressed. Its ok just using the fan.

Either the belt is loose and slipping when the a/c is engaged, or the bearings in the compressor itself are stuffed. If it's a squealing sound it's more likely to be the belt slipping, if it's a rougher sound then bearings/compressor itself is more likely.

hopefully it is just the belt ... It could be loose ... Or yeah slipping ... Otherwise, I think to replace the pulley is gonna cost a bit ... I had to do it on one of my other cars, as the pulley had actually been worn down ... It was not cheap ...

the air con and powersteer run off the same belt its fine if you dont use aircon as its just putting extra load on the pully, try to tighten belt via tensioner (underneath the motor) then replace belt as due anyway if its pully should not be too expensive to replace or you can just do away with aircon completely you wont lose heater or fans but will be hot in summer ;)

Sounds like the air con compressor clutch is starting to go. Got a spare for sale, $175 if you want it. You're welcome to borrow it too see if it fixes the problem, you'll need to bleed then regas the system to put it in thou..

If its only when you flick from recycled to fresh, then thats different. More than likely a leaf stuck in a vent or one of the little servo motors failing.
