What i like to point out is that fuel today and fuel in 2002 (Aritcle was written in Sept 02) are different. So maybe RichardH would like to do that test again. Optimax for one had changed their formula from good to bad.khunjeng wrote:
to stop all the debate chekc this out from FTO-WA. Should answer every1s questions based on real tests:
These are really good reads:
http://www.ftowa.com/html/workshop/workshopart05.html
http://www.ftowa.com/html/workshop/workshopart06.html
In the end...no real benifit was shown.
I've also post a thread a while back that said "bottled fuel addictive" isn't really adding ron to the fuel, they just ingredients to fool the ECU and made it think its on higher ron. They actually will damage your car if you do lots of short trips. I've got these information from the company who actually made these stuff.
BTW, thanks Eric, just a quick one, have you ever catch up with RichardH or any other W.A boys seen you arrived there?

thats a good point about the changes in fuel mixture since then. However the ECU behaviour remians the same. The ECU base and advance map would have been desigend for 100RON however the amount the timing will be retarded with the stock ecu obviusly isn't much as we can't tell the difference. If its only 1-3kw on a dyno its hardly conclusive as so many factors will effect your dyno run(s).
some tests would be good and more info on the FTO maps..

since you guys mention the 100 RON and 98 RON and booster thing, i went online and checked for the "united fuel" which states that they have 10% alcohol (ethanol) in their petrol and they claim it to increase the boost... and then again i went to check with the "federation chamber of automotive industries" and they say that all mitsubishi models can be filled with 10% ethanol...
and when the regular petrol 91RON is say 121.9 (which is very rare, but today it is!), the 95RON united petrol with 10% alcohol is only 118.9... that's a huge difference between the normal close-to 140 cents per litre for a 98RON petrol right??
so, any comment in this area??

The Federal Goverment are so full of sh*t, not long ago, they said ethanol are illegal as they are bad for cars...blah blah blah. Now they say is alright to have them.
I remember cop use to pop your bonnet and check if you got ethanol injection setup. If you do, is bye bye car.
Btw i'm sure that Federation Chamber haven't include imports in their so called finding.

so do we need to have any mods of the engine to use the ethanol petrol??
anyway, i've tried RON 95 two weeks ago and i have an additional of 100km compared with RON91 fuel.... well, not sure whether it is because i shift gears earlier or its a real fuel-saving thing...
anyway will have a 1 month trial and see what happens

According to NRMA testing, if your car manual state that it accepts 91ron, then pumping 95ron and above would be a waste of money. iT mainly for those higher-end engines and marketing.lawrencetlc wrote:so do we need to have any mods of the engine to use the ethanol petrol??

100km more when switching up to 95ron? that sounds impossible but still good to hear that.

hmmm that sound just like the post in one of the previous page and i'm sure a member had pointed out that those review are done on your average corolla, camry and the like. So whats the point of bringing it up to compare to a car like FTO which had been design to run on 100ron.
I'm pretty much sick of this topic over the years, is the same, every couple of month you get people who always think they are saving money by using low grade fuel.
Just get a Scooter or like tarkus said, get a push bike.

like FTO338 said... feel so sry for you bro. Btw, doesnt your car ping like a b*tch when running such low octane...?anyway, i've tried RON 95 two weeks ago and i have an additional of 100km compared with RON91 fuel.... well, not sure whether it is because i shift gears earlier or its a real fuel-saving thing...

i have not even tried anything below BP Ultimate or Shell Optimax in my FTO and never will its not worth doing that to an engine thats design to run high octone fuels .
might be cheaper to fill up 91 ron but more expensive to fix if something goes wrong
even my '84 twin cam corolla gets at least 95 ron

FTOs aren't designed to be run on 91 Octane Fuel.
Simple and clear cut.
Sure, it'll get by on 91ron fuel, but it won't be too happy and you'll probably shorten the life expectancy of the engine and I wouldn't be surprised if it threw a piston at some point if you open it up at one point. 10:1 compression ratio and detonation = bad.
You have been warned =P
This is the last time I'm gonna say this for this year =)
