Sorry for the noob post but i did do a search but couldnt find the answers i was looking for.
A friend of mine is looking to buy an FTO. He's asked me to help him look for one... the thing is i know nothing about them, and im pretty sure non of our close friends know either?
General questions i have are:
1. From my knowledge the difference between a GR and GPX is that GPX has a mivec engine... roughly 10kws more power than the GR? not sure, but would there be any other models im unaware of?
2. How does the tip-tronic auto compare to manuals? I drive a 7th gen celica myself and due to the gearing... the tip-tronic mode is terrible (roughly 2 sec's diff down the 1/4 mile) --- my friend cant drive manual though
3. Finally the most important question, are there any common problems to look for in a second hand FTO?
Thanks guys/gurls for any input

GR
Max Power: 127kw @ 7000rpm
Max Torque: 186Nm @ 4000rpm
Weight: 1150(Manual) 1170(Auto/Tip)
GPX
Max Power: 150kw @ 7500rpm
Max Torque: 200Nm @ 6000rpm
Weight: 1170(Manual) 1190(Auto/Tip)
As the difference between Auto and Manual.. I have a 57 year old lady at work, she saw my car and said "ah well a car's a car, it has 4 wheels, thats all they mean to me, is it a Auto or Manual? There's no point of buying a sports car if it's going to be auto"
The difference.. well I own a GR, and a Manual GR will beat a Auto/Tip GPX.
Don't be fooled by GRs though, on this forum if you put the modified GRs vs the modified GPXs, you'll find the GRs will have the upper hand

I think you have to becareful on that, if you comparing Bennoz GR, his got a super special once off Ralliart version which you won't able to get those parts anywhere.sublime19 wrote: Don't be fooled by GRs though, on this forum if you put the modified GRs vs the modified GPXs, you'll find the GRs will have the upper hand
I yet to see someone have more real road power (not paper figure) then our ex president's GPX, and you can buy all the parts he mod from UAS & RPW.

To be honest a properly working GR will out run a poorly maintained GPX, mivec is obviously faster but not to the point where you would buy one over a GR for that alone. The best part of mivec in the FTO is the sound for sure, i find though that they are really more prone to oil leaks.
If you can, find yourself a GX like what i have which is supposed to be just 10hp down from the mivec. Its basically a facelift (97+) GR with all of the available features installed. Plus easier to turbo charge than the GPX if you go that route which i did. I had a tiptronic transmission and changed to manual and the difference was quite surprising. Much more than the difference between mivec/non-mivec.
The link wouldve shown you the more common problems but they are all relatively minor. In all the FTO is a well, all be it, inexpensively built car that you can rely on and still have fun in
