from the posts that ive read, it does seem that the timing belt wasnt put on properly. That noise is only a result of that. Tappets dont sound like that. And a timing belt that hasnt been fitted properly can cause extensive damage to the engine.

Sounds like a bent valve, they will often stick or jam slightly open when bent, this then causes a noise that sounds like a really noisey tappet as the clearance between the valve and camshaft will be to big. if the belt was put on wrong it could have bent a valve when the valve hit a piston. A good way to check is to do a cylinder leakage test as a bent valve wont seal properly. And you don't need to start or crank the engine to do a cylinder leakage test. Mechanic should know this and have or be able to borrow the tool required to perform this test.

If that was the case - then your lookin at either a $$$ repair/rebuild, or replacement.

But get it checked out first.

"when the my fto came in the tappets was loud already and that triggered the probelm"

or

" the motor is getting too old..and this problem is about to happen anyway"

or

" the engine is not getting use to the new engin oil "

if what he is saying is currect with proof which my fto is not good enough thats fair
but right now i just dont feel justice.....the car went in fine and now the car is half dead....

1. Put it on a tilt tray and Take it to another workshop and get it fixed and get them to do a report that can be used in court/consumer protection if they can see that there is damaged caused by cambelt not installed properly

2. Put it on a tilt tray and take it to the RACV and get them to check it out, then take the workshop to consumer protection/court if they can see that there is damaged caused by cambelt not installed properly

3. If he put the cambelt on wrong to start with he knows he did it and would have corrected it but the damage has been done. you can get him to fix it and get even bigger bill. He could be telling the truth and your car engine was on its way out.

Ok after spending 2hrs talking, listening, & inspecting your car Poster.

This is what I found.

When he first started the engine, it was quiet & sounds normal, the tappet are quiet too. But after a while the ticking noise starts to appear. The noise is not consistent, it comes & go, & it sounds like a small item rolling inside the engine, so it only cause the "ticking" noise when it "rolling".

One of the new spark plugs tip is bended, but if you look at it closely, it appear to be hit by something small, because it only bended the inner tip (Red Arrow) & the outer "L" shape bit is perfectly fine ( highlighted in blue circle ).

There are few things which he also claimed & said he told you already.

1. The noise started after he changed the engine oil.

2. One of the Cam was out before he started to work on your car, so thatâ€™s why he suggested to change the timing belt since his already changing the spark plugs & adjusting the tappet.

3. Two washers were missing from the intake manifold, so he suspected one of them was dropped inside of the engine from your previous service.

4. There were lots of metal dust inside your intake manifold 1 & 6. Which he claimed a sign of trashing without proper service.

5. The oil you use previously is thicker, so it might cover the noise of what ever itâ€™s rolling around inside the engine.

He agreed to do a cylinder leakage test & will provide the result to me & you to see. Once he done that we can really tell if a valve is bended & we can take the next appropriate step from there.

By the way the person you spoke to on Wednesday wasnâ€™t Andrew. But he also said it sounds like there is something rolling inside your engine.

Its common to have some dust/crud inside your manifold/tb when you go to clean it

in fact i want to clean mine now!!

yes thats almost word by word of what alex said to me...good job kev!

one thing to let the audience know is for about 1 year i have only done minor services....so they didnt get in deep inside of my fto for long time

the one this i want to know is that if this happend:

why didnt it make any noise since 5 months ago?

yeah lol at the arguement that the thicker oil would stock a washer making noise if it was dropped in your enigine...its not like they use 15W-50!!!

The first u need to do is a compression check but it does seem like u have bent a valve. Therefore requiring the top head to be rebuilt and worst case scenario bottom end rebuilt as well. Not a good sign mate

There is no way this is tappets or becos of oil.

the thing is that this came as a huge suprise....i was going in for a service only got about $1000 ready to pay

and now an engine rebuild.....is going to cost ?hahahhaha dont even tell me....

Still another engine will probably cost you about $800 then Lee can put it in for you for about $300 so assuming it hasn't done too many kms you can get away with doing a major service for a while.
