Starter Motor

Post by Dr_Jones »

Hi all, I seem to be having intermittent starting issues and I'm guessing it's the starter motor. I already have a new battery and the alternator is practically brand new. All is charging great according to my DMM.

After a 30 minute trip or something similar I can't start the car after a quick stop, it just makes a horrible very slow starting sound but doesn't fire, it barely cranks. After 10 minutes or so it fires perfectly like nothing was wrong.

I'm guessing starter motor unless someone else knows better than me, any ideas on the cost of a recond unit?

Sounds like starter. One of the kids down here got theirs replaced the other day. They actually got a brand new galant one fitted into the existing housing of the FTO one. Mobile mechanic charged $350 for the whole job.

Whilst we are on the topic of alternators... is it possible to get a more powerful one into an FTO?

I'm thinking about putting in a second battery but I'm not sure if the factory alternator will be able to charge both batteries at once.

...I believe this was my first thread hijack... I'm so proud

I've tracked one down for 95 bucks but that's in NZ and may be just as bad as the one I have. I'd really like to track one locally that has perhaps been reconditioned. I'll do the fitting etc myself.

i got a second hand starter from NZ and its perfect! First crank i notice it cranched smoother and with less of a grind! Very happy.

If you car does not start tap the stater with a hammer, it works for a while untill your starter dies completly.

Well I went from some problems to total problem. Last night my starter finally gave up and decided to take up smoking. Ripped it out today which only took about 10 mins and will track one down tomorrow.

I was amazed at how easy it was to remove very un-japanesey.

I was the one who got the brand new galant one in the housing of my existing one. The actual starter motor prolly cost around $200 or less..

the mechanic did all the running around but if u can score one here for urself and your replacing it urself, it works like a dream.

My starter motor died the other day. Luckily, it died in the driveway of my mechanic mate. He reconditioned the starter (new brushes) for $50. Though those may be trade prices.
