FTO Rip Off

geez... gonna be hard to keep it as perfect as FTOluv...
he's set the benchmark pretty high

i'll be on the next cruise for sure...as for the mods...
...just gonna take those one step at a time

As much as I hate this place, JSA offered $20k for mine on a trade in basis when I enquired about their '90 GTO TT when I was looking for body kits.

The GTO was worth $30k and with the trade in they said I just pay the difference of $10k.

I was really tempting but there's no point in me buying a 1990 car when I own a 1997 model.

But twin turbo.........

I think the issue here is that there isnt enough people out there after to buy an FTO.
Even to this day, there are many people i come across that dont know what the car is

I think the FTO's problem in Australia from day one has been its identify, but saying that, thats what makes it so special

Regarding the GTO, I dont think much of those 1990 model GTO's, heavy slow and cant handle. Not to mention, 1001 problems with em

I think you're right FTOluv, the issue is one of supply and demand.

Demand is falling because people don't know about imports, because it is now around 10 yrs old and because most car yards are no longer interested in them.

yeah i got offered a similar trade like that on a EVO III, differance was 10 grand, real tempting but i have a rule i never buy a older car, mt next car would be about a 2000 model atleast, but they stoped making FTOs in 1999! ahhh

oh well maybe ill just buy a 1999 model first registered in 2000:D

For example, when i was looking for my car 2.5 years ago, there were only 4 FTO's on the market!! YES u heard me!! FOUR!!!

now theres at least 15-20!!!

and the same or less amount of people looking for em.

Would you say mine is overpriced at 15k ? Because Ihave very little interest, and not one person look at it !
I just dont want to let her go for next to nothing, I would prefer to keep it then let it for for less then 13k.

To be honest Gav I don't know why you're selling....even if you've got a company car.

Why not keep it as a weekend car, there are insurance options that let you stay insured for cheaper as long as you only do xyz amount of km's?

well I am actually loosing the company car, because I am going back to uni full time, so affording it will be difficult. but due to lack of interest Ill prob stick it out this year (it will be paid off at the end of this year).
I guess I'll play it by ear if someone offers me the price I want before uni goes back (march) then Ill proberbly sell it otherwise Ill keep it.
It just breaks my heart to see it there not beeing used at the moment, the other day I had a flat battery i had left it so long.
Anyways I do not think you will find many manual ftos around that price range, I have seen most manuals fetch up to 3-4k more because they are a manual.

Depending on what modifications u have done to the car, $15K would seem a bit hard to sell. It wouldnt have been one year ago, but prices have drastically changed since then

IMO, i think GAV's car is well worth its price, its got the face lift front, its a MIVEC as kicker & its a manual.

Agreed. I wouldn't sell for any less Gav, the right buyer will come.

Being a Mivec eater as well, I wouldnt sell for any less than 15k. If it doesnt sell, too bad - I'll keep it.

After spending a few hours browsing Car Sales.....I'd be inclined to say it's not just FTO's that are plummeting in price.

Almost all imports in general are going through the floor.....look at SW20's, they're at about the 15k mark when a year and a bit ago they were 18k+.

180s/200s are both dropping pretty quickly too.
Even Supras are down.

Best example is the R34, a little while ago they were selling for some 40k+ and these days you can get a good one for roughly 30k.

it's due to the change in the import rules. there is a lot more variety out there now than before. you can see rs4's, ae111, chasers, v35 skylines, etc. lots more to choose from now and some pretty good examples as well. remember also that s13's (sils/180s) are getting on in age especially the series 1 ca18's. it makes sense that a car depreciates with age, but it really speeds along if you buy an import due to the competition and the ever changing rules and regulations.

you'll also notice that there are a lot more company's bringing in non-turbo variants and advertising them as "P-Plater" friendly in NSW. This is also having an impact as the FTO is P-Plater driveable and there will be more cheap FTO imports coming through this year.

Just saw a dealer selling a freshly imported FTO GPX, '96, manual, 63k k's, white for $16,500 drive away! that's pretty cheap if you ask me as it inlcudes the warranty, road side assistance, etc. as well. Also advertised it as P-Plater friendly.

im not sayin that Gav's car isnt worth that amount, its just i can see it being hard to sell at that price where a car like mine took a few months to sell and a far cheaper price. I still reckon an FTO even costing $16K for a stocky is a better buy than any other car out on the market (as long as its in decent nick).

what r we discussing? FTO isn't popular? well it was never popular here so it should be no suprise to anyone that to sell one u have to drop the price. I'm always on the look out for some1 desp. to sell theirs for a cheep price...it comes every once and a while and I can get a bargin...

I was talking to a mate of mine whos in the compliance game and he said the reason why they have just dropped is that they are now bringing them into the country again. More supply I guess.

just had a quick look at carsales.com.au

In all of Australia there is only 1 dealer trying to sell an FTO while there are 60 people trying to sell their FTO privately, many of which have been for sale for quite a long time.

It looks like dealers don't want to touch them and those trying to sell them privately are having a very hard time, especially anyone wanting $15K or more.

there have never been many dealers selling FTO's. (a) they normally dont know much about them, (b) its not the place that many people go looking for imports...

when i was looking 3 years ago, i would see maybe 1 or 2 at dealers, and the rest were either private sales or importers... I didnt go for an import yard as they were overpriced and often in not great condition. I had my lancer on the market for 6 months before it sold, and only one person looked at it. He also bought it for the same price that I had bought it for 12 months earlier, because it was in great condition and well looked after. I think the same with FTO's, if you are not in a hurry to sell, you have serviced it regularly, and its a clean good example of the car you will eventually get your asking price (assuming its reasonably realistic).

Tell me what are you actually here for? 3/4 of your post are either bagging someone's FTO price or FTO price in general. If you not happy with the price of your own car, i suggest you either sell it now or its just going to get cheaper by the day, & like i said before, we don't need someone who every now & then post the same thing to remind us.
