Auto drops down a gear when going down a hill

Post by jrad »

Anyone elses do this?
Its really annoying.

When youre freeballing down a steep hill and then the car decides that you must be going slower because youre not excelerating and automatically drops to third.
The car jolts suddenly and the engine revs high.

Whats this all about and how do I stop it from happening?

it's supposed to do that...
if you don't want it to, tap the gears into tiptronic, then it'll only kick down a gear if the engine is about to labour. Just don't for get to change up gears or push it back to drive after

It shouldn't really do it harsh though.

if it's harsh changing up through the gears under light acceleration then your auto probably needs a service ;)
I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

until then:
1. 2001 Merc-Benz A160 (porta-loo on wheels)
2. 2007 Peugeot 307 TDi (more fun than you'd expect)
3. 2009 Mitsubishi Triton Di-D (a monster in its own right)
4. 1992 Nissan NX Coupe (club car and project car)
5. 1996 Holden SB Barina - "The Nugget"
6. 1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee Sport - The Budget Build
7. 2010 Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series - V8 Goodness... - Build coming soon.
8. 1990 Audi 90 manual - The delightfully dignified daily driver

The automatic transmission in the FTO is supposed to do that as a form of "engine braking". Pretty silly I know but if you don't like it, just use tiptronic mode to override it. :)

Just lightly touch your brake and it stops it.

My car did this to me when I was roadtripping home from visiting Technikhaus...slowly cruising down a hill, and hello 3rd gear outta nowhere, wtf??
Glad to know after reading this thread that it was meant to do that, lol.
