Certificate 2 in Automotive Mechanical

Post by shadowarrior »

Things haven't been going well at work so I have decided to quit my current job. Going to hand over the letter on Monday, so I will have some free time on my hand to enjoy soon :)

I had been interested in learning more about automotive servicing for some time now. So after some searching through the Tafe webpage, I came across something which interests me.

I am planning to enroll in this course: Certificate 2 in Automotive Mechanical (Pre-apprenticeship) from the Coomera Marine Campus
http://gcit.edu.au/cis/?script_name=cou ... se_id=1477

Its Monday to Thursday of studies and workshop and Friday mandatory vocational placement organized by them. I want to start learning from the basics, so the units covered seem to have good content. Not sure how much depth each unit will cover but it's a 13 week full time course so am hoping to learn something out of it.

Has anyone here finished/enrolled in a similar course? Any feedback? Is it value for money?

If it teaches me some basic knowledge to do simple work on my cars by myself instead of taking it to a mechanic, that according to me should pay off the course' value. :)

Can I hope to get an apprentice role after completing this course? (I intend to continue with some more specialized certificates after this, but the course requires me to be currently working in an auto shop/auto school as an entry requirement).

Looks good, same subjects as a first year apprentice.

Maybe start applying for apprenticeship jobs too, you never know your luck.

Thanks Phil.

I was thinking of using their vocational placement. So they put me in a workshop to gain 200 hrs mandatory training while on job...and I try and build a rapport with the workshop and get in there as an apprentice. That way they will know my work and I will put extra effort during those 200 hrs to make a positive impression. :)

I spoke to couple of workshops today, they are looking for people who already know how to work on the cars so the apprentice should be on the floor working while they are busy with their stuff. They don't have the time to teach/train an apprentice. So am guessing they are looking for someone who have already completed this course and has some industry experience?

Fair enough...
enroll in the course, but keep looking for an apprenticeship - seek, papers, group training organisations
Good luck

BTW...I think I have helped you too much lately

I have done that course it covers pretty much your whole first year of training for your apprenticeship so it helps a lot and I got my apprenticeship through it because places ring the tafe asking for apprentices plus you can also try and get an apprenticeship through the place your doing your work placement at

That sounds awesome :) Thanks mate. Which institute did you complete the certificate from? Did you go on to complete other certificates or are you working as an apprentice right now? In the list of units, there are tons of 'electives'. What's the course structure like? say how many total units do I need to take to complete the course? There is one mandatory unit of Apply Safe Work Practices, and the vocational training of 200hrs...but how many units from that list of electives do I study? (I would love it if they allow me to study all of them :P ) I asked the person at QLD Tafe today over the phone but he didn't know about the elective units.

Also, I think there are two locations in Gold Coast which run this course; Ashmore and Coomera...and the locations cover different units from that list. So I have to go to the campus and ask them on Monday. Was going to enroll tonight :\

Am effing' excited about this!! :D

@Phil, lol :P Let's have a beer challenge then....who drinks the most, you or me. Game? :P

lol no Jim Beams for me...haven't tried them apart from the can pre-mix ones and didn't like it. I try not to mix my drinks.. learnt that too many times the hard way :P
So we got to start and finish with the same stuff.... rum (inner circle) with coke, beer, vodka, scotch (that sh*t gets expensive :P)...choose your weapon!! Lets put it in the rule book to call the ambo if either/both of us collapse though :P

Oh and I need to save space for the BBQ and grill as well :)
