you old boring fart

but seriously i'm going to have to split this thread into another cause its way off topic... so continuing on...
I myself also require my car every day to get me to and from work, expect IT to perform to the best of MY abilities on the race track and make it home in one piece.
it is stupid to go on the roads and push your car to the limit... i know i've been guilty of pushing my car on the roads but no where near 100% like i do on the track... why? well if i'd had the tyre blowout from Oran Park on the road there would probably be 2 dead FTO Club members and if i was really unlucky several dead innocent people (say it hit an oncoming car at 100-120km/h)
Whilst track days, Motorkhana, hill climb, drag combat, and other events do cost money they are sooooo much safer than doing it on a public road... oh and its legal
Drag combats only cost like 50.00 ...
Track days cost from 90.00 ...
My preference is track events and for my money i can go flat out till i run out of tyres or petrol or i get to tired, or all of these.
My Position as the National President on this is quite clear, the club and its committee encourage everyone to test their cars speed and handling ability, we expect this to be tested in a controled area such as a race track, skid pan, drag strip, private road, closed road (hill climb and other events).
We also expect all members to drive to the conditions and their abilities on public roads whilst obeying the relevant laws.
A lot of states now have a new law which says if you exceed the posted speed limit by more than 30km's you will have your license suspended for 3 months, generally speaking the only thing i can think of that's worth risking my livelyhood (if i loose my license i'd find it very hard to work), would be a medical emergency.
50km Zone 80km or over ... this is a residental area with little kids who can run onto the road without warning, why would you exceed the speed limit here? even if you live in the street and drive it several times a day... you run the risk of killing someone.
60km Zone 90km or over... NRMA has done several reports over the years and found that speeding uses more petrol and in sydney on a half hour trip saves you like 2 minutes... constant stopping for traffic lights is one of the reasons here why speeding only costs you fuel economy.
70km Zone 100km or over as above
80km Zone 110km many of the two above zones and this one have school zones... if your flying down the road at upto 110km and hit a 40 zone... your now doing 70kms over the speed limit which in NSW is a 12 month license suspension and a fine around 2000.00... so your speeding along and a kid runs off a school bus (or across an intersection) just in front of you, your going to hit them and probably kill them.
90km Zone 120km generally only Motorways and divided roads country roads... Motorways are patrolled by police and have lots of speed cameras ... if you are going to speed (and by no means condoning it) motorways are probably the safer of roads to do it on.
100km Zone 130km as above
110km Zone 140km or over... doing over 130km/h but not more than 140km and you have an instant 1 month suspension in NSW.. i'm sure this has penetrated to other states as well... 140km an hour is pretty damn fast... if any part of your car fails you have just gone from being a car to being a lump of metal rolling down the road out of control...
i know a lot of people are looking at this going, yeah yeah not me, but everyone has a story about themselves or a mate who's had a high speed crash and the results...
you may even look at this and decide that the money is too much to go fang your car around the track... all it takes is one speeding fine and the track day just became the cheaper option, and you could have gone to at least two drag combat sessions (for the cheapest fine) ... the NSW Police have a slogan "if you speed it's only a matter of time" whilst i really hate this slogan it is true.
anyway i'm getting off my soap box now...
