just picked up FTO, a few concerns.

hey guys, love the layout of your forum, and after a bit of a search, everyone seems like they help each other out really well

so basically here are my concerns....
firstly. my car is an FTO GPX 5SPD,

ive been in the honda game for a few years now, owning an fto was a spur moment last night... drove past it, and bought it.. just like that. so im not overly knowledgeable on these power plants

it has a set of tien coilovers, but one is blown out bad FL, if anyone has a front set laying around out of a wreck let me know!!

no power steering or aircon! - owner said something was run over, and damaged it, so it was removed! - fair call? - how hard are these items to replace? how hard are the parts to be sourced?

200,000km service, im assuming these engines do run on a belt system not a chain! what ewlse is to be changed? plugs,leads,oil,filter, from a quick skim, heard the fuel filters are awesum to change -.-...

overhead noise, also had a quick read on an overheadnoise problem these things inherit ... is it a matter of adjusting the lash adjusters? is it an easy fix?

All I know is the lashers/tappets are a sh*t of a job myself and a mate on here who shall remain nameless for his sake did not so long ago took pretty much the day to do so but yeah that's all I can let u know

Sounds like it has a lot of mechanical problems, hope it was cheap

re the teins, Fulcrum in QLD can do a rebuild for you, though I'd recommend doing the whole set together, otherwise you might have imbalances. Look em up and give em a call.

Re power steering / AC, could be just the belt gone?

From my experiences, I would assume that overhead noise would be your tappets... They like to go sh*t after a while on FTOs

Major service would be what you listed and yes, these run on a belt system! I'm mid way through my 200,000km service at the moment and it's an educational experience!

What sort of a Honda were you rolling in before you found this beautiful beast you speak of?

haha, still rolling around in a honda ... i have a JDM 96 Spec Type R integra, with a Jackson Racing Supercharger, running at just shy of 200kw, runs 13.1.. on street tyres.. and it was my first time out ever on a strip

the problems that i know it has are

the power steering pump/aircon ( he told me was 1 unit ?? ) has been damaged..

no cold start?

and one of the teins need replacing..

sounds like you car has been in an accident then, as the power steering pump and the AC are not one unit, rather they are bolted to the front of the engine on one bracket, power steering just above the other.
I have a power steering pump spare but im sure dstocks - our resident parts man will have everything, as in NSW, not brisbane like me so far cheaper postage etc.
The tappets arent too hard to adjust they just take time and effort - do you know what weight oil you are currently running? if your running to light then you will start to hear them regardless of if theyre considered noisy or not.
As for the fuel filter, they are not as hard as everybody thinks, either everybody is soft or doesnt have the right tools etc it takes all of about an hour at most if your slow. (probably going to cop some gripe for that one)
my main concern is your car has been in an accident, enough to damage aircon and ps pump, which means theres a good chance some damage has also been done to other pulleys and belts, i would recommend assessing the engine before you commit to start replacing everything as it might not be worth it if your unlucky.
As shane said, get all the shocks rebuilt, weird that just one has gone along with this other damage to the car - was it your drivers side front?
And the no cold start? could be a number of things, might be the fuel pump on its way out, wrong spark plugs etc im sure Bennoz or Payaya will chime in soon enough with a few ideas.
I bought my FTO on a spur the moment thing too, lucky for me it was a late model GPR with fender bars.

he said he ran up one of the concrete stoppers at car parks. and it hit the pumps...? the cr drives really straight, doesnt pull, no funny noises.... yet

ill get it up on a hoist and have a better look underneath

anyone know a proceedure on taking the pump off... or is just a matter of gettting under there and undoing bolts... ive heard these things are a wee bit tricky to play with some area's

if there is a belt on there, just cut if off a you want to replace it anyway, then simply unbolt them both off the bracket. I think the aircon has 4 bolts facing forwards at the front and the PS pump has a few on the sides - but they both just bolt off easily enough.
I would however inspect all other pulleys and the balancer as clearly he hasnt just hit a concrete stopper on the ground - the PS pump is a good 40cm off the ground, id say hes hit a pole and replaced the bumper, bonnet and rheo and had the front end re-straightened, just cant imagine that damage with a stopper.

im not sure... it does have one of those version R body kits on it... so could be right on the money...

might be why the engine is on a heckers angle too.... kinda like its sagged on the front left if looking at the car

Hmmm, i would really suggest pulling the engine out and taking a good look at it, especially the mounts if its on a lean. All it takes is the timing belt to skip a tooth and its all over potentially - and the car has been hit very close to it. All i know is that the previous owner is definitely either hiding a lot of the story or telling you a completely different one. Just hope the rest of the car isnt a lemon. Definitely get it properly inspected before you potentially waste your time with it.
I would also get your control arms/bushes/links etc checked as well - if your coilover is shot they have possibly bent a control arm as well etc.

OK, id be surprised if it has damaged the power steering pump. Much more likely that it has stuffed the AC condensor and it has been taken off as a result (or isnt capable of running the belt). As the AC condensor is on the same belt as the power steering pump, my guess is that the belt has been removed completely (thus power steering is not working).

I would have said that you could also just throw in a set of KYB Excel G shocks (just over $200 for both) in the front end instead of the coilovers, but I guess youd need springs and strut tops as well to pull that one off.

The power steering pump can be seen without having to do that. Its on the drivers side front corner of the engine about half way up. Pulley is ribbed and will be black (if all else fails, follow the hose from the black bottle with the gold/silver cap). If there is no belt on it, then that confirms what ive just said. If there is a belt on it, im buggered if I know how it got damaged from the gutter incident as it is nowhere near the location it would have had to be to be hit by the gutter. The AC compressor however is typically damaged when this type of thing happens. Check to make sure you dont have any snapped off bolts in the block and that the block itself hasnt been damaged by the mishap. The aircon compressor would normally be held on by 4 fairly long bolts.

G'Day Alexplicit, WTTC.
Just letting you know that I have had my Tein coilovers rebuilt and new shafts and it cost me $900 for the front pair. They were sent to Fulcrum in QLD via mt local Tein distributer on the Central Coast. With your top end noise, it is worth adjusting your tappets but this does not always quieten it fully (does it Vectose ) as your hydraulic lifters could also be creating noise. As dstocks said take a better look in your engine bay to determine exactly what your steering/air con problem could be.

so chucked her up on the hoist, power steering pump looks fine? although, the aircon has hit something very harsh.. so thats fakd..

power steering seems like its leaking pretty heavily too.. not to sure why.. but last owner by the looks of things has had a go at ripping the 2 out.. ( missing bolts )

the harmonic balancer also by the looks of things took a hit.. it has a chip taken off it.

had a good look at the top and bottom rad support, straight original and undamaged. good thing i guess

so the list of things i have just racked up are as follows!

Front Right engine mount

power steering pump

A/C pump

chipped harmonic balancer

F/R tein knocking

THE ONE REALLY DOING MY HEAD IN! it has factory HID's but the bulbs are missing h2c bulbs?? do i seriously have to source these?? or can i adapt something else??

most amazing thing happened at work today... another fellow member came in, in his FTO, and i put a sound system in it ( im the technician/fitter at autObarn ) and he has a mivec gpx wreck out the back of his house that he has given me full access too!

so i guess... where off to a good start!
