I don't think it has stages as such
This is true, but when you cannot do that anymore its a good indication of how much on the warning light you have left

Andym wrote:my fuel meter must be reading wrong, i'm sitting on empty at the moment and have travelled about 510km, and when I fill up im only putting in 40-43L

does this mean i have another 200 or so KM of driving left on empty? :\
The fuel level indicator can only reach so much of the fuel tank. You'll probably find that when the light comes on you'll have about 15L reserve, and then once it hits dead empty (as in the needle doesn't move when you start the car) there'll be about 3-5L left.

As aza said, drive around with a 5L jerry can in the boot and take note of how many km's you travel between the fuel light coming on and the fuel actually running out. This will give you a good indication of just how far you can go when your light is on.
I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

until then:
1. 2001 Merc-Benz A160 (porta-loo on wheels)
2. 2007 Peugeot 307 TDi (more fun than you'd expect)
3. 2009 Mitsubishi Triton Di-D (a monster in its own right)
4. 1992 Nissan NX Coupe (club car and project car)
5. 1996 Holden SB Barina - "The Nugget"
6. 1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee Sport - The Budget Build
7. 2010 Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series - V8 Goodness... - Build coming soon.
8. 1990 Audi 90 manual - The delightfully dignified daily driver

I just noticed by fuel consumption has dropped 150kms a tank. What goes on the FTO that causes higher fuel consumption except for the oxygen sensor?
