Decision made, going to keep my FTO!!! 
Cant see it going to a dealer that is ripping me off and possibly on-selling it to someone who will trash it.
Will probably keep it open for offers but not going to give it up as a trade in and pay the difference for my new car.
And yes, Sahin is correct. That's exactly why FTO's and some other Japanese imports have flares. However, they are meant to be removed when the car is imported as they are apparently illegal in AUS (I wonder if it will still work after 16 years?)
Thanks to everyone for the great comments and support. I feel much better having made my decision to keep my FTO and look forward to continue driving it.
