Noob Q - manual transmission oil and fluid?

Post by bass_twitch »

What is the difference and how do I change each of them?
Lol, I saw the DIY for the oil but I'm unsure what oil to use.
Also I got myself some syntax whatever it is, but that's fluid and I'm all confused? :p haha. Help?

Fluid is oil.

Fluid is simply another term for a liquid.
Oil falls in to the category of a liquid, which in turn makes it a fluid.

I hope I have confused you more.

Yeah.
bass_twitch wrote:Less things I need to buy
All you need is the oil/fluid/liquid itself, a container to put the old oil in, and a funnel (I used a container with a pump top (idk what they're called)).

About 2.2 L.

After you empty it, you just fill it until it starts overflowing.

You lazy twat

You had 2 more letters to type, and 1 to correct.

*sigh* civilisation is doomed.

Edit for usefulness: Just realised you bought 75W. hmmmm. don't know FTO boxes, but most misu boxes I've dealt with use 80W 90.

Can't remember price sorry, I THINK last time I bought 4L bottle Nulon brand for........ $55, something like that.

That was over a year ago meanwhile, so vague memory.

That's fine because I've already spent $60 for 2L, so $55 for 4L sounds good to me..

I used this is mine. No complaints.

I haven't used any other oils so I don't know how it compares to cheaper brands.

Or if I can get away with slightly cheaper stuff, given it's not used in a race application.

Can't remember what I used prior to limo diff

I'd reckon 75w will be fine. FTO boxes can be a bit of a princess if they get oil thats too heavy. They'll hate you & crunch into first & second when cold.

I would be careful putting a GL-5 oil into an FTO gearbox.

Typically, a GL-5 gear oil will have about 2 times the active additive level of a GL-4 product. This additional additives can cause problems with yellow metals like brass or bronze.

I am using this one http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/g ... nual_trans. At $30 for 2.5L I think it is well priced and it is well suited to the FTO gearbox, lim slip diff (stock one anyway) and all.
