You could get by with one, but it won't cost much more to run extra cable for redundancy at this stage of construction.

Or you guys could stop being silly and just get a N-Spec Wireless router with the 4 antennas, instead of all the wiring and switches. Hey even chuck high DB antennas on the thing.

Still slower than wired, which will make a difference if you stream HD movies over it.
LED ALL the things.

I would just put wire down aswell, while you have the chance. Saves putting wireless cards in all the computers too!

Well you've obviously never tried to stream 1080p video from a server over a wireless network now have you? :)

Wired all the way

N is a toss anyway, its just a combination of B & G protocols. Still runs on the same congested frequency.

You want stability, go high end APs with A on the 5Ghz band.

Like so

Ok that sh*t right there...just lost me.

Right ok, scenario time.

I want to be able to sit out on my deck, drinking a beer and listening to music that is stored on pc in the study.

I want to wire in speakers all around the house and so my issue's are as follows:
how do I get the music from the pc to the speakers remotely. eg I dont want to have to get up everytime to change song alter volume etc. Is there remote or something. I read somewhere that an Ipad or Iphone can do this wirelessly.

I also would like to have zones eg playing on song in the bedroom and one song on the deck. I realise I need media players just cant invisage how it is all going to come together

I think what he said is don't buy a wirelss n router there not as good as there made out to be. And his picture says get an extended antenna to get a stronger signal and better distance.

This is true if your playing through iTunes, but why the hell would you want that piece of crap software! There may be an app for another program though, havn't looked into it.

A simple solution would be to wire the speakers out on the deck to the computer in your study. Play them from the computer and just get a long range media remote control or keyboard to control it all.

If you want to go down the mega-epic path of awesomeness then do this:

What you can do is setup a home server pc. This is usually just a regular pc that features shitloads of storage space compared to your other pc's because it would contain all your music, videos, movies, pictures and whatever "other media" you like :hey:

You can place this home server in your study and it would connect up to your switch just like all your other computers. The difference is that it holds all the media you would like to share and all you do is enable sharing on the folders that house this media that you wish to share to your other computers. Once youve done this, suddenly all that media is accessible to all computers and MEDIA devices in the house that are connected to your network (ie. via the switch).

Next step would be to find a media player that can connect to your network, its best to find one that can be hooked up to the network directly rather than a wifi one, even though wifi might be ok for music, you still don't want to f**k around with wifi settings and deal with music stutter when network traffic gets crazy.

some of these look okay but most have features that you might not use so its best to go to a few computer stores and ask around: http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/advanced_s ... turers_id=

Basically you put this media player out on the deck (make sure its secured) and hook it up to some speakers and your network as well through the wall outlet shown previously, this will allow you to remotely stream music out onto your deck from the music on your home server located in your study. You can get network media players with built in screens and they will allow you to navigate through the folders to find the song you want to play or if it doesn't come with a screen you can usually hook up a LCD tv and use that instead. Good thing about the tv is that you can watch movies too if you want.

f**k yeah!!! now that is what I am talking about.

So in this scenario, I could listen to music on the deck, while the misses was watching a movie in the bedroom as long as there was a media player in there???????

Correct, as long as her laptop or network media player is connected to the network you can both retrieve content you've stored on the home server pc that you've placed in the study. So she can listen to music off a device in one room of the house, while your out on the deck listening to music or watching something at the same time. You could both be streaming the same music out of the same folder from the home server pc at the same time without any issues.

Yeah, cabling shouldnt be too expensive and with hard drives becoming dirt cheap, you can just pop a few 2TB in there and raid them for very little. Can get them about $130 each now.
