...and what if it's not the gearbox at all, but just the torque convertor?

talk to UAS, tell them the situation, tell them that it might just be the torque convertor and ask them for an indication of price for:
1) fixing torque convervtor
2) fixing / replacing whole gear box
3) converting to 5sp tip or manual

once you have these answers it should be a little easier to make your mind up as to which way to go.

redline shock proof oil is a must for anyone who "drives" their car...
i use it and love the stuff....

but at the same time my car goes down into second at 120-130km/h ;) so it needs extra protection at times.

Steve's talking about gearbox oil, the Mobil 1 oil you've listed is engine oil.

When i had my torque converter rebuilt it cost me $330 not including labour which i did myself.I cant see how replacing the gear box and torque converter together could be any cheaper :?

Unless you have something VERY unique about your FTO that would cost a hell of a lot to put on to a new FTO (e.g. turbo) then I just don't believe it is worthwhile doing a transmission swap. If you want a manual then fix your tip FTO, sell it and buy a manual.

FTO617, even the response your mechanic gave suggests that the issue is just the torque convertor, so why are you even considering doing gearbox swaps?

Get UAS involved and tell them you think it's just the torque convertor and find out the price. To repeat what Scracy said, and to state the obvious again, if all you need replaced / fixed is your torque convertor then this will be cheaper than replacing both your torque converter and gearbox or doing a transmission change.
