No one's going to buy an FTO they can't even test drive. I'd say you'll have to get it fixed, unless you're prepared to let it go very cheaply. Either way, you need to find out exactly what is wrong and get a quote to fix it.

it shouldn't be too hard to do the swap... but finding a manual box will be harder than finding a tip box

Get onto www.partslocator.com.au and search for FTOs at wreckers.

There are usually a fair number. Then start ringing around!

eg.

Two places listed "Manual Gearbox"...

- Top Jap Autos DANDENONG Vic
- Japco WOODVILLE SA

And possibly a third one that listed "V6 MIVEC 5sp". What that means exactly is anyone's guess.

Good luck.

if you do the 5pd tip you will need:

* 5spd instrument cluster
* 5spd ECU

in addition to the new 5ps tip box.

Lots of UK owners have done tip->manual conversions.

Check out these forums and ask around...

www.jcars.co.uk
www.ftooc.org

the order of difficulty for installation is:

4 spd Tip - easy
5 spd man - bit harder
5 spd tip - most work

the order of difficulty for sourcing parts is:
4 spd tip - easy
5 spd tip - harder
5 spd manual - hardest

i'd imagine it would cost anywhere between 2-3K for the job, and i'm purely taking a stab in the dark here.... could be more, or less but it will be a lot of work nonetheless. Best of luck! :D

Have you actually got a mechanic to pull your auto one apart to see what was wrong with it?

Are you sure its the gear box and not the converter? A converter only costs around $330 to fix.Your symtoms are very simular to the ones my car had.
