Bad consumption
Hi all, I drive a 2.0Mivec FTO. Experiencing not so good fuel economy.
Driving habits are 70% highway and 30% city. Have not changed driving habits for 6 years.
When the car was new(6yrs ago) could get 10km/l, wacking with mivec can get 9.5km/l.
typical fuel rates are as follows:
3/4full 200km. 1/2full 300km, 1/4full 450km. can left 1/8full tank at 550km than top up.
now can onli get 8.5km/l, with mivec wacking can onli get 8km/l.
typical fuel rates are as follows:
3/4full 130km. 1/2full 200km, 1/4full 330km. can left 1/8full tank at 400 than must top up liao.
Can anyone help? Very fustrated. now done dare to mivec e car liao, too expensive on e wallet. I am sure the amount of money to get to rectify the fault is definitely cheaper than the cumalative EXTRA money spend on petrol the last 2-3 years.
The car is stock, even wheels. now just did 100k timing belt service and all related stuff.
Thanks all in advance for any advice!
Cheers!
Sam

"eh, maybe you are using a dodgy batch of fuel-leh?
does the fuel warning light come on when you get to 400kms?
i'm starting to get similar problems liao, although nowhere near as bad as you larrr...
have u had any extra passengers in the car lately? more passengers = more weight, hence more power needed to carry the weight around mah...
also if you use your aircon regularly and your tyres are not running the right pressure, it can also affect your fuel consumption one so be careful lorrr..."

there's actually quite a number of S'poreans here, ie: Jono, Eric (SBE8888), Sam (wildfaye) just to name a few...
omg don't say that... last time i was in singapore they had just released a song called something like "just say larrr" and i bet you can guess the lyrics...

took months to get it out of my head...........
back onto the topic... so many possibilities i would consider:
injectors
transmission oil (how old is it?)
engine oil (do you service regularly still?)
does the car run rich??? (could be an O2 sensor)
umm.... there are some starting points

Not sure, if it makes any different, or if your not using it alrdy, but you should be using priemium petrol, about as cloose to 100octane as you can get... I think all premium is 95, but shell optimax is 98? with an addetivie, you could get that closer to 100...
but I think they did some research on these boards, and showed the addedtive didn't really help out at all....

Let the original speak for himself.
AHEM: Wah Lau Eh....
Okie, my car runs the aircon daily, jesus the weather here suxx.
Max of 2 pple in the car all the time. Only load is 2 umbrellas and 1 street directory. No ICE.
Tyre pressures are stock as recommended.
Used to get the fuel lamp on at ard 480kms, now 360kms
No one sells dodgy fuel in Singapore.
Have already cleaned throttle body and injectors, all filters in the car have been changed. All fluids have been flushed.
Runs on esso-mobil 8000(octane 98).
Runs on mobil 1 super syn 5w50.
I duno if the car runs rich, but i smell some petrol outside sumtimes.
How do I check the O2 sensor and how does it work? Is it expensive to repair/replace?
Any more suggestions or info needed?
I reckon the amount of extra money spend on petrol weekly is more than sufficient to give me a reasonable yield on better consumption, if i were to spend it on rectifying this fault.

ok i'm at a loss as to what the problem is... its obvious the car has been properly maintained....
O2 sensors here are in the 250-300 mark depending on how much you get ripped off... not really sure how to tell if your sensor is going... it is attached to your exhaust just before the extractors where the engine pipes become one (post exctractors before cat).
i wouldn't be adding octane booster if your running fuel over a 95 octane rating, the fto will happily run on fuel from 95 and above.
as you always run aircon (and i so know why) you're getting pretty damn good fuel econ... there will be a difference in fuel econ from econ mode and full aircon mode... have you changed the way you operate your aircon? in econ mode the compressor only runs when its required to keep the car at x degree's... in full mode it runs constantly.
does this help?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
just a bit of trivia from a friend who races motor bikes he says that the lower the octane rating you can run (Without pinging) the better it will give you more power.... i haven't dyno'd this to prove it and i'm not sure of the theory behind it but it may be worth testing.
here we pay between 8-10cents per litre for mobil 8000 and other fuels of similar quality what are you paying?

To provide a very simplified example:smorison wrote:just a bit of trivia from a friend who races motor bikes he says that the lower the octane rating you can run (Without pinging) the better it will give you more power.... i haven't dyno'd this to prove it and i'm not sure of the theory behind it but it may be worth testing.
Car A is designed to run on 95 RON fuel
Car B is designed to run on 100 RON fuel
If you put 95 RON fuel in both cars, Car A will perform normally while Car B will under perform and have detonation issues
If you put 100 RON fuel in both cars, Car A will over perform while Car B will perfrom normally
If you put 105 RON fuel in both cars, both Car A and Car B will both over perform, but as a percentage the RON rating of the fuel vs the RON requirements of the car are much higher for Car A and it will over perform more than what Car B will
Make sense?

For a real world example, BP Ultimate (98 RON) will make a Commodore or Falcon over-perform as they were desgined to run on 92-95 RON fuel. Whereas for us FTO owners it will only make our cars run at the normal level, as they were desinged to run on 100 RON.

Well i guess we can always re-programe the FTO ECU to run on 98ron instead of 100ron, so we'll be always run on optimum level in Oz.

I've been running the aircon in econ mode since the day 1 got the car.smorison wrote: as you always run aircon (and i so know why) you're getting pretty damn good fuel econ... there will be a difference in fuel econ from econ mode and full aircon mode... have you changed the way you operate your aircon? in econ mode the compressor only runs when its required to keep the car at x degree's... in full mode it runs constantly.
Hmm, i guess i better check that O2 sensor out. Will the Mit Mut2 ecu dianogsis eqmt be able to find out if there's an error in the O2 sensor?
Petrol here is expensive! I always run on 98 petrol and i done think there are any >98 petrols ard here.

it may, not sure. if the 02 sensor is simply worn out it won't pick that upwildfaye wrote:

Ever heard of programmable piggy back before???GPXXX wrote:funny, i was always under the impression that the stock factory ECU on the FTO is non-reprogrammable?FTO338 wrote:Well i guess we can always re-programe the FTO ECU to run on 98ron instead of 100ron, so we'll be always run on optimum level in Oz.
