FTO's should be better..

The Eclipse runs a little over 3500 Lbs with the driver, without a full fuel tank.
The trouble with FWD, well the FTO, is there's not a lot of weight in it, but going bigger cubes, turbo or not, is just adding to the engine/drivetrain mass sitting over the front axle. great traction..in a straight line.

how much do you think an FTO is going to weigh with a turbo setup, piping, cooler, transfer case, prop shaft/s and rear diff, plus the other gear not mentioned?MuMan wrote:And supras, 300zx"s, skylines & GT3000's have something FTO's don't have...weight!

Well the cars listed are all renowned for having a weight problem, mabe a little less with the Skylines, but they are also considered fast cars..maybe a little less with the 300ZX.
So purely on power/weight ratio, FTO's are way ahead (in weight).
So if your looking for more performance what are you going to do? Fit a bigger heavier engine?
I'm not sure what you mean by your question..you mean if Mitsubshi developed a AWD turbo FTO? or you mean if someone did a conversion?
I personally wouldn't even consider an AWD or RWD conversion..it'd be a nightmare.
I would however look at a 4g63t engine/trans conversion using a Garret Gt28 or Gt30, TD06 or similar, custom DP & 3" exhaust.
The aluminum IC & pipes don't add much & apart from the turbo itself, everything is either there in it's present form, or just needs to be upgraded.
I think weight savings would more than offset anything you bolt back on.
Even 200Kw in a car the size & weight of the FTO would make it come alive, and there's way more potential in a 4g63t than that.

Poeple have to understand, the FTO was a quick car but not anymore. The FTO was a great handling car, but not anymore.
Dont people understand that the FTO is 14 years old!!! The architecture is dated, obviously, it is in terms of development 3 generations behind current cars. People who think the FTO handles good is correct, but its sacrifices a lot of comfort for this and after all its a 60k car. Put the FTO in a test against new cars in its class and it would not come close to the current models.

So surely if you put yourself in the GTR or REX you would have been able to beat your FTO. I mean I have had an FTO for yonks now, and I've driven many others cars, if I wanted a drag monster or track specialist I would invest in something else. I mean you could go buy a BA Falcon taxi spend 5K on it and it will be muck quicker than an FTO will ever be with normal mods.
I mean you could buy a XR6T spend 2k on it and it will be in the 12s easy.

I put it to you that an FTO could be 'just as good' .. as some of the newer cars on the market if you spent some serious dough on it - You can pick up an FTO these days for sometimes less than 10k, I'm sure you can imagine that you could get a pretty serious setup happening if you spent 50-60k on it,even without making it AWD
For those of us who aren't obsessed with Kw ATW & all that crap, a lot of the flaws of an older car are in the way that it sounds while you're in the cabin, too much road noise, panels rattling etc ...
I've just pulled out my entire interior, laid about $850 worth of Dynamat & Stinger Roadkill & sound insulation foam, on the floorpan, interior panels, exterior skin, firewall, rear parcel shelf etc .. the difference is amazing! & I'm still yet to put the interior carpet, interior panels & boot lining back in..
Still yet to put another 36Sq ft of Dynamat in the boot & doors & Expanding foam in all the hollow body panels etc so once that is done, I am hoping that its going to be comparable to some of the newer luxury cars on the market these days.. time will tell.. if not, I'll spend a bit more

Power vs weight is a lot more important on a track/circuit than on a drag strip..........anyone can put their foot to the floor on the straight coming out of the last corner but if your car needs to be able to do 12's just to catch up to a FTO on like a 1 minute circuit theres a problem...........

What a load of sh*t, it was never that quick of a car. thats why theres f**k all aftermarket parts for them. "Boy racers', "hoons", whatever you wanna call them werent interested in them much at all. The Euros have changed a lot since the days! The FTO would not be accepted today in dynamics, its way too stiff in the suspension which gives it, its sporty handling.
Give you an example! If the FTO is such a great platform why not use it in the current lancer? The current lancer is totally crap around corners, its no where near the front. So I guess thats why Mitsubishi it losing money, they spend money on making their platforms worse.
Im not being biased I have an FTO just stating the facts.

For the price its a brilliant car totally agreed! But think about it, everyone is comparing the FTO to new cars thats why Im saying its not as good! There are many cars that are better handlers for way less, have a look around and you'll see.
Give you an example.
I drive an FTO and Fiesta (known as one of the best handlers if not best for a small car) all the time, Im more than certain the FTO is slightly faster around corners, but the Fiesta does it with more compliance and is less nervous around corners.
Why is this? Upto date suspension and is a current gen vehicle.
