most people i see mount them in the centre console head unit spot. seen quite a few people cut a space in the dash for them too.

Do a little bit of custom work and use it to replace the ashtray?

as I have the cf suround there is a perfect spot where the ashtray was...I did this esp. for the SAFC when I get around to buying one.

Another spot is up near the drivers side vent..top one...pretty common spot. The rides on the clock/voltage bit make it hard to mount there which is also popular.

I just dig up my old pics (good old memory  ) and as you can see i put my SAFC where the ashtray is and the RSM at the top right corner of the dash.

my AVCR which is the same size as the SAFC is mounted on the ashtray on my other car...I would prefer a dash mount to make it easier to read. But the SAFC isn't doing much so ash-tray is probably ok.
