Has anyone replaced their own starter motor before?

My starter is screwed. I had the brushes replaced about a year ago, and now it's dead again. So I rung around the wreckers and it seems that $100 is the going price.
Now, the question is... can I replace this part myself? I mean, it's right at the bottom of the car. So all I need to do it jack it up and do a straight swap? Remove various bolts and then replace in reverse order?
Let me know if this is a simple DIY.

Yeah, easy job. 2 x 14mm bolts, unplug the cabling & she drops right out from under. Its at the front of the engine bay

Starter motor and Stepper motor, are they the same thing?? Oh so confused.

- Idle speed stepper motor control the idle of the engine.
- Starter motor turns over the engine.
The idle speed stepper is kind of under the airbox and is considerably smaller.

ya one is big...one is small...I just got one today..thanks Bennoz..
starter as suggested drops straight out...shouldn't be too hard to get to...unlike say the water pump which kinda sucks.

Picked up a second hand starter this afternoon and fitted it. Worked the first time. Had a bastard of a time getting out, but getting it back in was quick and easy. Thanks for the advice. Probably saved a bit on labour.
So now I have a spare starter motor. I should probably have it refurbed and sell it on.

I hope you also refurb'd the second hand one, they may seem fine, but those brushes can be pretty worn.
I replaced mine a month or so ago, the second hand one was put onto the test bench and it worked, then $30 later and another set of brushes had the thing fair humming. Twisted the bench top vice that wasn't quite bolted down properly.
Nice and cheap for a bit of peace of mind I think...
