Awesome device...

sort of...
its a bit distracting while driving because its so bright... but its cool anyway cos its bright blue...

I'd post a picture but I don't have one at the moment... I'll take one when I get home tonight...

Its the DG8 Digital Gear Indicator Display, which is made for motorcycles but is suited for cars aswell with electic tachos and speedos... And supports up to 8 gears etc... The gear number on the display basically changes to what gear your in, in the car (after you've told it how many gears you've got and gone through each gear at around 2k rpm to teach it the rpm/speed ratios).

The delay is about 2-3 seconds though, between when you change gears and the time it takes to display it, so its only good (that i can think of) when your on a track and thinking of loads of other things besides what gear your in and youve been in that gear awhile already, or something. Which is kinda rare...

The other problem is that motorcyles seem to have a Neutral Switch and Neutral Light for some reason, and i had to wire it into the car with a light and switch to copy it and get neutral to show on the display. So i gotta basically flick a switch to select neutral 'mode' where the gear indicator wont display anything other than 0 or n or N (thats selectable aswell) until I flick the switch the other way to tell it im out of neutral so it'll then hunt for what gear is what and display it. If im not in neutral mode but the car is in neutral or the clutch is in, it displays '5' unless I flick the switch for N.

So...uh......

does anyone happen to know of a way to make a switch flick open or something when you select neutral with a manual gearbox?

put a really sensitive switch behind your clutch, i.e. when u press your clutch in fully (a bit of messing around so u can put it in just the right place though) it'll trigger the switch to trigger it to N.

or u can put a tiny switch into your gear box (look for where the stick sits when it's in netural and rig something up there, as simple as 2 exposed wires and when the stick goes into netrual it conects the 2 wires to complete the circurt - dodgy but it should work)

or u can do both.

but both of these solutions mean u'll be "in nutural" between gears. but on the upper hand, they r virtually free solutions lol

i thought of that... having some exposed wires on the gearknob and one where neutral hits but i can see it being dodgy and causing a headache somehow.....

the switch behind the clutch could work. i'll have to visit a dicksmith store and have a look around...

well if u just rip apart the switch u have now to do it, it'll work, in fact exposed wires would work (i.e. u have 2 exposed wires and when u press the clutch in the 2 wires touch), with that same thought, u can just have a push button at where the clutch presses in, make sure the button doesnt lock in (i.e. when u stop pressing it, it goes to off).

the problem with the clutch pedal idea is that it wont actually show nutural when u r in N gear. so u can put this switch idea in the gear box, have the gear stick push the button in when it's in nutural, but that means u have to have a very small switch and a lot of mucking around to get it just right, but i guess its worth it if u r anal about little things liek me lol

good luck with it (it may sound like a 20min job, i'll bet u $50 it'll end up taking you days if u decide to do it just right lol)

still tossing up if i want to connect it up right with neutral cos when your really gonna need to use it on a track or something you wont really be using neutral and u'd be slamming the clutch a lot

its about $150 from riderstation, its built for motorcycles but it fits cars aswell so teh wiring diagram for it will have a 'neutral switch/light' on it so you just have to wire that part in with a spare switch and 12v light... found it makes for a good on/off switch if you find it too distracting for around town aswell so it displays '0' until you flick the switch to start displaying non-neutral gears... unless you find a way to hook it up properly to the cars real neutral...

dont use bare wires. use a "Contact switch" aka a "microswitch" and find a spot where something (Gearstick, cables, etc) will hit it ONLY when your in neutral.

wouldnt that mean u'll be "in nutural" between gears? and since he said it has a lag, then i guess it would be quite annoying.
what if u did that in the box and have a switch on your cluth as well, make it so that it only makes a full circurt when gear stick is in N and u r not pressing on the clutch.
