Suspension?

Post by DeFunkeD »

Hey, im considering my next move in modifying my fto and thought since i love a car that can handle that maybe the next thing would be suspension. im finding it a bit hard to get info on what kits will suit an fto, so thought i'd ask you guys.

would basically like an idea on what brands/models suit fto's well and what sort of price could be expected.

coilovers would be nice, i've seen tein's for about 2K, but would like a more comprehensive picture of what i'll be looking at for a good setup.

if its something that's pretty expensive then that's cool, im willing to wait and save my pennies if i know im getting good stuff.

any ideas?....

Have a look at the thread 2 above this one  Theres not much in there as far as coilovers go, but everything else is.

there should be some info around somewhere :?:

i'd recommend Tien SS but thats because i have them and i haven't tryed any other suspension apart from stock.

gave the car a more stable on/off acceleration and fast turn/fling back reaction (with quick turn unsettling/movements) so the car doesnt become as unstable (compared to stock), but thats just uprated springs and shocks and lower c.o.g. doing that i think.

after fitting the Tein SS i lowered it until my 205/55/16 tyres on stock rims rubbed on the guards when turning, but the camber is also set around -2.5 front -1.5 rear. after fitting (and depending on rim size and offset) its best to go to a proper suspension shop and get them to do a semi-race/semi-street wheel caster/toe/camber/alignment etc to get good handling settings so that you get even more benefit from them but without wearing the tyres unnecessarly fast.

i felt a bit more understeer on full stiffness both fr and r, but just recently i found setting the rear suspension about 5 notches stiffer than the front even's it up completely (so far that ive tested) and it turns in more eagerly aswell. so now if it lets go at the limit instead of undeer steer its likely to 4wd drift. then you just need semi slicks more anti roll gear and chassis stiffness and your in business.

theres a lot of gear around for lancer suspension and its the same as for the fto / mirages, (the coilovers), except for the front springs are normally supposed to be uprated a bit more on the fto because of the weight of the v6. same otherwise.

d2 racing coilovers are the cheapest, and i think they can do custom spring rates for you. not sure how reliable though.
tein ss coilovers are the second cheapest i know of, and they come with pillow ball mounts for front camber adjustment, and theres dealers in aus to easily repair/replace the shocks when they wear out.

I went the other way I simply got some Koni dampening adjustable shocks and lowered springs. I got the ride height I wanted and made it so I could go hard and soft hehe. Works really well I find. I got my suspenions guy to setup mine and it handels well, might go some pillow tops next round..mine cost $1200 for front and rear adjustables...

thanks, i think that'll be really useful. are there any prices and suppliers that you would recommend for what you mentioned above?

d2 coilovers .. dont quote me... about 1500 or less
tein ss.. about 2300

all suspension dealers in aus should be able to get the teins as theres a base in aus now for em now somewhere. might be a slightly bit longer lasting than the d2s aswell, but in the end they both do the same thing really. not sure where to get d2's...might be in another topic around here somewhere.......

i do have one more question... if i were to go the other direction, what do you think of King Springs performance-wise? would there be a better option?

king springs are nice & cheap, don't last super long but last longer then the apexi one i had 8O

if you really want a D2 coilover like me i can recommend you a guy that should cost you $1300 or less 8)
The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problem.

better than the standard strut tops, plus some give you camber adjustment.
