Snowgoose Update

Post by Raven »

Update of http://www.ftoaustralia.com/modules.php ... pic&t=7904

Ok.. i have now just about finished with interior panels, i have cleaned up all the electrical and layed some new stuff for the subs and amp and am now sourcing final parts for sound system then wood to construct boot.

Im very noob to all the car stereo stuff but my basic understanding has lead me to the below setup, please tell me if (or what) is wrong or if im missing something or something is overkill.

i have done some reading this site and others and have come up with the following.

i have purchased a 12inch Titanium Eclipse max power of 1500w and 750rms. and also a Blaupunkt D Class (not digital FTOLuv ;) ) 3000w max and 1500rms at 4oms.

i plan to use this day to day and want power to cover it. will i need to upgrade my alternator? if so to what Amps and how much $$ am i looking at for it?.

Also looking at buying a Stinger 5 farad capacitor for $600.
and a Drycell Stinger battery to run in boot..not sure which yet, Amp ratings on these not meaning to much to me.

Any help be appreciated thanks.

I was hoping it would be a bit brighter red myself, i had to paint it something as pervious owner had put holes in it, so i puttyed and sanded. couldnt do white cause of pannel above and didnt want black as it would look weird next to other different black pannels. i also plan to do other bits of red trim like neons and brake calipers ect.

You will need a dual battery charging kit from a 4WD store to charge both batteries at the same time.

Also the capacitor is a overkill in my opinion.

And I am pretty sure the capacitior has to be installed inline with the positive lead.

Oh god... please for the love of god dont do that wiring... that is a very nice little short circuit and will fry your cap among other things..... Go to a professional... it may cost more but u wont blow up your expensive stuff...
The best thing for you is one battery setup... but one big arse battery...around 1000CCA would be fine... Not only will you avoid complicated charging systems or solenoids but it will save you $$$...
Get a decent battery.. oddessy or Optima Yellow top would be ok...
You alternator probably wont like charging two batteries and will probably die pretty quickly... keep it simple... with a decent battery and big cable (4Ga min 2 or 1 would be good) you wont need a cap... 750Wrms is big but not that big... I Run 4000WRMS in my fto with one battery and no Cap... (2 runs of 0Ga help)..
This is what i'd do..
Buy the best battery you can get.. $800 if you have to... get good one built for audio (oddessy or optima)
Buy some good thick cable (2G please)
Upgrade the cable from your alternator to your battery to 2Ga too...
Upgrade all your ground cable (Alt-Gnd, Eng-Gnd, Battery-Gnd) 2GA
if u did get a capacitor 1 Farad is plenty... roughly 1 F for every 1000WRMS
Just a note for future reference.. Dont every worry about Peak Power or PMPO or Max or whatever... its utter crap.. RMS is the true indication of power....
Just save the money from the cap and go for battery... will last longer and be easier on your alternator...
btw: to upgrade alternator: dont worry.. i got mine reco'd recently and was $400... i asked and he said to do anything to the alternator would be expensive.. ($1000 mark)...
BTW is yours GPX or GR?? (Maybe Cheaper for non-mivec)

Thanks for the advice :)

Dont plan to go to a pro for this.. either it works when i install it or i learn a lot tryin ;)

i want/need the 2 battery setup as i am running 2 much electrics up front of car i want 2 indipendent systems. i have relised for this system i wont need cap if i have 2 bats.

although $$ always play on my mind i not afraid to spend it to get thi right. i looking at stinger or optima for the 2nd battery. i have allready bought a special 2 battery charger from jaycar that will do the trick :)

as for the altenator i still bit iffy on, with the 2 bats and charger..i think.. i will be allright but i suppose it couldnt hurt to upgrade. "$400"..? hmm was thinking/hoping for more like 200 max but if i need to i happy to.

As for cable.. :) i rewired everything i need to in 0G or 1G and will do so for anything else i install. (damn copper prices gone up of late... like $40/m 0G..Harsh).

Just been working on boot this weekend.. bought myself a jigsaw and lotsa MDF. Think i have all the pannels cut to size, just sourcing material to cover them this week. hopfully have finished this week end.
