Post by artful_dodger »

Being new to the forum and also FTO's

what are tappet's, why is there so much discussion on them and why do they need regular work on them (or so it seems

Befuddled

we dont call them tappets any more, we call them Tappers
They tap more than anything you can imagine, tap tap tap tap tap tap.....
You spend big $$$ or countless hours to fix this ennoying noise, and they come back again in no time
Tap tap tap tap tap tap tap.....

What engine do you have, MIVEC or NON MIVEC

the MIVEC engine has adjustible tappets, and the NON MIVEC has non adjustible.

If you have a MIVEC you can adjust them and then it should be quiet for the next 10000km - 15000km.
The clearance is .10mm for intake and .13mm for exhaust.

the motor is getting pretty old though
11 years or so old now

my tappets stopped ticking straight after my last service where they put 25ish/50 stuff in i think, and it still revs hard. would imagine a few kw loss of power + economy, at the very top end, but i prefer the non-ticking noise :?

thicker oil is if you have non-mivec, if you have a mivec just get them adjusted.

mate at 8000rpm and at operating temp 50 is too think in my opinion - and in the opinion of most decent FTO mechanics I have spoken to..

but hey...whatever works for you!

it obviously does on the track... http://image-cache.skylinesaustralia.co ... 021220.jpg
with a stock motor at 145k k's, and standard suspension

thick oil is obviously not gonna stop ya revving to 8k, and even by then the power curve has well dropped off, though, thinner oil will do it better. duno about engine oil temperature.

but as i said anyway my motor is well worn so im sticking to thick oil :)

yeah as I said whatever works for you

my engine has only done like 40k....so I'm in a differnet boat...but if power drops off even at max revs...why not just adjust your tappets and use thinner oil???

cause it cost a fortune and only go quiet for 10-15k after? 8O
The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problem.

Its not hard to do your own tappets, you will find that they are pretty easy, the only thing is that you have to make the spanner to fit the lock nut, so basically just modify a 10mm ring spanner.
You could buy a 10mm crowsfoot spanner, that might fit and you won't have to modify that.
