Project Snowgoose

Post by Raven »

Well i had a full week off work and decided it was time to get stuck into restoring and updating my FTO. Any questions, queries or comments on what i have done and what I plan are very welcomed and hope to have this all finished soon enough..
Over the last 12 months I have been slowly acquiring everything I want to install into my car. (For anyone wondering, Snowgoose was printed on a wood box I used in my previous install in my last FTO and the name just stuck :) )

I have broken down this project into different stages consisting of:
1) Painting interior panels
2) Re-laying all current electrical things
3) Engine servicing and tuning
4) Alarm, Remote start 2 way paging system
5) Boot panels + Sub and Amp
6) Computer, DVD, TV, Playstation 2, GPS and red liquorice dispenser
7) Scissor doors
8) Finally a Complete Respray

These need to be done in no real particular order but something to the effect of what I wrote.

What I’m working with:
FTO GPX Black, GT wing, white Advanti 18 “ 5 spoke mags, sh!test interior paint job i have ever seen, weird untasteful stickers in attempt to make it look like a race car

Painting interior panels

I decided to start with the thing that was bugging me the most as the previous owner decided he would paint the panels as well, he obviously had never heard about the inventions of the Spray can or Primer. I completely stripped my car of all panels and even seats to make for an easier work place. Every single panel took me about 5 – 6 hours each of Stripping, sanding, filing, sanding, scrapping, and more sanding. I had to remove every trace of his paint but in doing so also required to remove the leather texture that EVERY panel has in the FTO. I started with a power sander (finishing, not belt) with 120grit then 120grit by hand then 240grit, then 600grit, my god I'm over sanding and I still haven’t finished all the panels.

Painting seemed somewhat easier; I was using a white vinyl dye so I only needed about 3 light coats instead of 8 – 10 of primer 20 mins between coats. Then 3 – 4 coats of white..Just until I was satisfied it really was white, 30 mins apart. I left them for at least 6 hours then before putting 3 clear topcoats on. (The first test piece I did a week ago went yellowy as the top coat was not UV resistant, easy fix) I’m now back at work and about 80% through the panels, luckily I am able to sneak out the back where I work and throw coats on here 

Re-laying all current electrical things

If I spent my entire week sanding I’d end up with arthritis before the week was out, not to mention going crazy. So I took the opportunity to clean up the electrics of the car. The previous owner left not only under body neon’s, 2*12inch subs and a cadence amp and a 5 inch monster tacho (why the hell do you need this!? The car has a tacho...) in the car but about 8 large neon’s attached to the inner roof and in the boot. I took out the back seat to reveal the chaos of cables; I could not see the metal under the seat due to the sheer amount of cables entangled there. At first I thought I could leave some to use in the new setup but scratched that quick and ripped out the lot. During this project I often asked myself “what the hell could have been going through his mind when he did this?â€

i doubt you can finish it in a week that's all but sounds like a cool project :D
The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problem.

Holy f**king oh my god, you win my "best effort to do anything ever" award! I'm really glad that you're going the hard yards yourself to customise your FTO unlike some other pissweak people who get everything little thing done by a mechanic or some other retard that only has a halfbaked idea of what he's doing.

Sounds great, but there's one issue I just must address before any other... where are the picture?? :P Seriously, I wanna see how this is shaping up!

The other small issue may just be semantics, but, you said you were using vinyl dye, but then you said you were using primer. Now, I think you've just used the wrong term and are actually using platic/ivnyl paint rather then dye, because you do not use primer when you're going to lay down vinyl dye.

Moving on, nice to see some bloody good quality audio components going in, you obviously have the money to spend, and it seems that you're spending it well. I was so relieved not to read "and i'm putting in a 15' xplod subwoofer and some pioneer amps".

It sucks abit, in my opinion, that you lost the texture of the interior parts. I know you've already gone through and done the interior bits already, but if you can try and source some used interior panels from a dressed wreck or something and vinyl dye (not vinyl paint) it white. It will take a fair few coats but it should preserve around 50% of the texture, it might be worth making a comparison between this and what you've already done. Also, the dyed pieces will not need clearcoating because you cannot scratch or damage the white surface.

Keep us updated and please throw up some pics! Use www.filelodge.com if you need somewhere to put htem.

Ahhh sh!t.. it is a dye..and i have used primer..and top coat.
i asked secificaly about this at 2 different places.. guess they diddnt click that i was using the word dye.

the pieces ive done have come up really nice though so i dont think i will strip them again...should i? and i like the top coat cause it gives a nice finish to it..and is uv resistant.
and i'm putting in a 15' xplod subwoofer and some pioneer amps
would never let something like this near my FTO.

i have tried 3 different wreckers, each one recomended by the last when they did not have spare panels. all specialized in imports but only spare panels they had were door inserts.

SORRY TO POST SUCH A PROJECT WITHOUT PICS! i know its cruel, but my car, my camera, and i are all in different places, i will have them up by monday.

Ahhh, i forgot for the second time to bring the pictures i have taken into work. its the only place i have access to net right now but i have them on a cd ready to go.

I have got a lot of the front pannels back in now but been finding it hard to get the time and effort to get the back ones finneshed and back in. i should have started from the back and prioritised better as i cant drive my FTO untill they are in and the back seats back in (not legal to).

i did however grab a cuple of 12v relays and with a simple readme of the net, hooked up my mirrors to fold in when i lock the car and vise versa

i WILL bring in the cd 2moz
