toy shop want something ridiculous like 500$ for a headlight

they wanted to try and sell me rear tail light for 750-800$ for 1 . lol..

Try Panelhouse. I will also try a couple of places in Adelaide if you have no luck.

There is also a place in Newcastle who might be able to help - had a stack of them 18 months ago. "The Toyshop" I think they are called from memory.
