Help needed! - Idiots guide to SCSI

Hi All,

Just wondering if someone can help me.........

I have acquired a number of older ex-server Ultra2 SCSI drives and a suitable SCSI cable due to a server upgrade.

Ultimately I would like to install these drives in a RAID 5 configuration on a PC at home (it has a server case and 530W power supply) to backup critical data and my masses of FTO information.

Any ideas as what type of PCI card (not server based) I would need to run these? and where to get one at a reasonable cost?

Adaptec would be your best bet.

Hardly anyone would stock SCSI these days, so just pick the one you after & use the serial/model number to order it from any good retail store.

BTW if you going to run RAID 5, SATA/SATAII would be a much cheaper option. How many GB you running anyway?

Only 36.4GB x 6..............the drives were freebies...........errrr.........depreciated.

If I can pick a cheap SCSI RAID card then all is good, otherwise I will just turf the drives.

eheheh with 6 of them i would run RAID 6, what rpm speed are they? You might have better luck on ebay for a 2nd hand controller.

eheheh but have u try RAID 0 on a Raptor? I've done a 2x 150GB Raptor Clear Edition in RAID 0..... not cheap but dam fast

Hey Breza, what type of server did they come out of? If its HP (Compaq) or dell you can actually pull the drives out if the mounting brackets & mount them in a normal 5.25" PC drive bay.... Put up some pics if you can

I have acres of server parts here, including cages & RAID controllers that would work in a PC. And I dont take Amex - I take beer

Hey Ben,

Not sure about server.............

Drives are already bare and ready to be mounted, they are IBM, SCSI Ultra2 LVD/SE 80Mbytes/sec. (I think they are 7200rpm)

next thing i need is a bloody fan for my CPU ... stupid P4 733 pin is like a fry pan!

You mean the 775 socket/pin? To be honest i'm not impress with any new intel chipset at all, all of them have heat issue, & they are much slower on benchmark test with the same hardware configuration, especially the Intel D (Duo Core).

I've builded a Intel 2.8Ghz Dual Core & the AMD Sempron 3000+ had almost the same benchmark score against it. Ever since then I've lost faith with Intel.

I've been doing lots of cooling & aftermarket cooler test lately & what you need is the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu, its around $70, & it will drop your CPU degree by 6-7 degree. The higher end model are around 1-2 degree better but around $30-70 more, so its not worth it in my opinion.

Alternatively, just upgrade to an AMD64 939 pin or AMD64 Dual Core, they all run at much lower heat & had higher benchmark score in every test.

lol thats nice looking fan..can u upgrade the heat sinks?? This brings back memories when I used to upgrade my vid cards with crazy heat sinks and fans and they took up to pci slots...hehe

i saw that fan around yeh, thinking of buying one but still deciding should i change to AMD instead ... the heat issue with new intel chipset yes they p me off

cheap solution is fan but i always want a better video card ... thinking of something with 512MB but too pricey ... everything stupid little bits adds up ..... new motherboard

What you actually do that need 512MB of RAM for graphic cards? If you do need it, heres the ranking result with after we benchmarking 7800GTX.

1. BFG
2. Asus
3. Leadtek
4. Gigabyte

Haven't try Sapphire yet.
