FTO Gearbox situation

Post by thegw »

I have a mate who just purchased an fto with a shot gearbox. Its the tip tronic/auto one, and the motor in the 6 cylinder version.
He got quoted over $1000 for one from a couple of wreckers, and im thinking screw that, id want it installed for that much too.
I think the gearbox is a F4A42 or something....im just wondering if these come in any other mitsu's, or something that wasnt an import so he doesnt pay the premium. Or even if someone has a cheap solution/source. ( a rebuild isnt an option btw). Even if someone could direct me to one for sale on here....i apologise for my vagueness, i just dont know anything about fto's
thanks for any assistance.

Complete strip down and rebuild: ~$3.5k

Purchase second hand box and install: ~$2k

Turn into manual: ~$2.9k

Having a tip box bought and installed for under 1k? You're dreaming.

I know 'cos I've been through it all......twice.

I recon go manual, the only problem that will only come in every couple of years would be the clutch, unless you really thrash it (snappin it style gear shifts) can't go wrong.
