Intresting Development

Post by khunjeng »

yo fellas

After my "incident" where a my rim came off following a slow puncture on the cruise - and the resulting spin and stop in the ditch - I have noticed that when my car is warm (warm only) there is a noise comming from the "belt/belts" down the drivers side...bit like a squeak......took it for a spin and yeah its there...let the car cool down and its not?...

I would assume the only real damage I could have done was a bit of twisting..although the struct bar woulda helped stop that I hope..

Cant work out why the pully or belt would start to make a noise when warm?

I'm gonna take it to Lee to have a quick look to work out what it is but has anyone got any ideas form my "quality" description?

I've found that when my belts squeak a simple drop of oil onto the pulley and presto, no more squeak.

funny enough I was thinking that...sounds like that kind of squeak...when you say "onto the pully" I assume u mean the baring bit..not directly onto the belt...

Yah, but getting an oil dropper down there is a bit of a pain in the proverbial.

I just aimed, dropped and hoped it hit.

ordinary oil can ruin the belts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will soak in and then the belt starts to get soft. and you dont want your bits getting soft!

you can get some PROPER belt spray from any engineering supply company, I have got a can, that came from A & A Industrial supplies on London Drive Bayswater.

Chris, if you want to borrow mine, just give me a shout.

Hey KJ,

have you had a look right under the car since the incident? Did you bottom out at all? perhaps when heading 'ditch-ward'?

Reason I ask is that the A/C & Power steering belt has a tensioner pulley that is very close the bottom of the car & a good bottom-out could have given it a whack. Depending on how good a hit it was, you could have new bearings seated into it or worse case scenarion, replace it...

My 2 cents

I've had that problem with the squeak until I pulled out the belt and there was a nice long crack on it but a drop of water makes the noise disappear. Inspect the belt and hopefully it'll only cost you $30 for a new belt to get rid of that noise.

thanks doods. Its not a really bad noise...really slight and doesn't hapen when cold.

I was going to have a look under the car but I hadn't had much time...i'II put it over my pit tomorrow hopefully check it out. It will also let me get to the pullies a bit easier as form the top its quite difficult as Bucket said before.

I did split a little bit of oil on the belt but cleaned it off as best i could however I'm sure some got down the side...anyway I'II keep an eye on this.

I forgot I had a guide to change the Powersteering and Alternator belts...I'II probably just pull them off anyway and replace them cos I feel like doing it...

Thanks Tarkus...I'II let you know if I want the belt stufff...I think my Dad has some from is factory...

BTW I happen to own a Factory that makes socks. I was thinking about getting some special ones made for the club. I might post this in another part of the forum..I would make them for cost in low numbers...probably $5 per pair in eitehr a sport or work style..

ps: this cruise video is getting bigger than Ben Hur! I tried to put some titles etc and some music in the background and the file size has gone thru the roof.
