One thing i've learn over the years is, you never underestimate any car, & the Accord Vti might have some work done to it.
The way you launch will also makes a different too, & like Kirby (thecook) said, you can redline the FTO at 8krpm, it was design to do so.

It's all down to the launch. Also don't forget the FTO isn't that great from a standing start, from a rolling start it's great providing you keep the revs in the upper band.
Don't be afraid to go to 8000 rpm, just make sure the engine has been warmed up first.
Other upgrades: de-cat, intake pipe, bored out throttle body.

Remember, the FTO isn't a drag car.....it's a touring car.
We're good at nice curvy tracks/roads we we can keep the car in it's usable powerband and take advantage of our incredible handling.
As for mods, have a chat to Mr Bishi as he appears to have one of the fastest N/A FTOs around at the moment.
Also, as Grant stated, a Unichip or aftermarket ECU will go along way to increasing your power (as long as it's tuned properly).
And yeah, de-catting = mega no no here in Aus. Ten thousand dollar fine last time I heard.

dont much about my car, but so far i've been able to take down skyline gts, honda civic -ctec, focus, accord (i think was 98 model) and some others. one thing i've noticed is u need to set your mivec point right and as sson as the lights turn red, u need to make sure u are the first one to leave . lol.

As Boris & Bucket pointed out already, the mivec controller doesn't do much, & from memory Steve (Godfather) had done some dyno test on this, & if you have the mivec kick in earlier, it actually slow the car down.
