Cant rev fast enough in 3rd

Post by wildfaye »

I've got a 98 GPX. Been to track a couple of times and noticed that 3rd is pretty weak. Its a 5spd Tip btw. Got a decat, atf cooler, enginer oil cooler.
Teins HAs, whiteline antiroll bars. Dats abt it. Corners on rails.

1st and 2nd revs pretty quick, drops to mivec range in 2nd from 1st and pulls to 120+ briskly. However, drops to ard 5k rpm in 3rd and runs out of breath. slowly dials up from 120+ to at most 150 on e striaghts, no chance to get to 4rd and its time for next corner.

Is anyone facing this? How can i improve it? Or is it jus the gear rations not being close enuff and is an inherent prob?

I done intend to do much to the car, prob do a piggy back ecu.

Hope anyone can advise.
Cheers
Sam

I have a manual and 3rd gets into MIVEC range easily, however I don't get into MIVEC in 2nd from 1st.

I guess besides playing around with gear ratio stuff, trying to get more power from 5000rpm upwards would be a good idea?

Do you have an exhaust? Extractors?

Only got the hi-flo cat, done really want to touch on e extractors n exhuast. In Singapore btw. Anyone got any ideas if not touching the exhaust will be able to generate a better pull in 3rd? How do I go about getting more power from above 5k rpm?

I really think the exhaust is the best idea, as it'll improve power at those revs
Maybe a computer but I think you should do exhaust first

Hi Wild,

If you want high end gains in 3rd you will need to get extractors IMOP heres a post i put in another thread .... BTW you can get all this from RPW there is a group buy on for the extractors ....

Hi Guys,

I have this on my car and would recommend getting the Manifold and TB fitted especially for those with cat back exhaust, CAI kit and the RPW extractors... I also got the FPR and the high end gains on this setup are crazy !!

When hitting mivec in 3rd gear the rev meter snaps up to 6000rpm and the from about 135-140 kph to around 155-160 kph instantly... YOu might be thinking wats the use of it if you have to go that fast to get the gains well i say its just bloody good fun! and there are noticble gains in 1st and 2nd ...

Now i havent got the cat back fitted as yet just have the N1 xforce barrel, but doing that and getting a piggy back ECU your looking at a fast car !

you could try slightly thinner engine oil if nothing else works... though you might start getting noisey tappets

I spose the xorst n extractors r e way 2 go.
But over here if u get hauled in its a instant 500 fine cos its illegal.
I do know its not much of a use if i do a unichip w/o e xorst n extractors.
hmm :?

Why would you get a fine for it being illegal?
I mean, if you set it up so it's quite you should've have a problem?
