It could be just a damaged synchro that a transmission specialist could fix.
This may be a cheaper option than trying to source a manual gearbox.

i have the same prob, it starts with 3rd gearm i dunno why, i have spoken to other members, and it has started at 3rd gear as well when changing at high evs, which is very anoying on the freeway. Changing the syncros can be very expensive, there is a lot of labour involved, and if you can get your hands ona good quality 2nd hand gearbox and bolt it in, it may actally be cheaper. I may be looking in to doing the same thing, or near new gearboxes. mainly cause i love the feeling of a new gearbox

i have enquired about having the gearbox reconditioned....some jap gearbox specialist in Ringwood, melbourne have quote $4000.... yeah right!!!! haha

i think i try and source a second hand gearbox. i have a good friend who lives in japan so i'll ask him if he can source me one. I research and if i find anything of use, i'll post it.

G_A_V.... yeah it is very annoying on the freeway....i think it is the synchro, but yeah sourcing it may be a bit hard. labour for replacing a gearbox should be all that much....i hope.

I had my tiptronic transmission reconditioned a month ago. It cost $2500, with $1250 contributed by my warranty company. This is usually a better option than buying a 2nd hand gearbox, as there is no assurance as to how worn out this gearbox might be. For all you know, it might screw up on you within months. When you get your own transmission reconditioned, they give you a warranty on their workmanship.

Theremin - I'm not exactly sure how many kms my gearbox did. I'm pretty sure the ODO was wound back when I bought the car. Judging by wear and tear of components, I would say that it had done 50-60 thousand kms.

gearboxes

Post by elmo »

erm, i dunno how much luck you will have finding a box.... DANNYBOYAU has been looking for a spare for a while.
Then again 4k seem like a lot for an overhaul???
If you match the revs a bit better, ie take your foot off a little more during the change, it will take the load off the synchro and it should pop in easy. Like a road train when they don't use a clutch, you can do the same in your car, just use the clutch aswell to help a bit.
Synchro damage is done by grinding the gears, flat changes going up or agressive downchanges. Third would be the first to go as it the one most of us use to slow down quickly.
BTW have this lot reconned a box before or did they quote a worst case scenario cause they dont know what they are doin?

err

Post by elmo »

err, good question...
I just assumed it was manual cause he said "gearbox" not "transmission", cause auto's aint got no gears in the box.... but it is a commonly abused term so???
But i could be wrong.
If you got an auto that wont change you got real problems... then again it could just be a leaky vaccuum line.

yeah manual gearbox.....
i have noticed that when i do ease of the accelerator and use the clutch it will go in....but that's take away from driving the car...
hmmm....i have email my fren in japan and his having a look for me...also i have called around for some wreakers and it is possible to be able to get the manual box....but still researching all my options.
thanks for everybody's comments and help....it's appreciated.

Jerrin, a possible reason that you are having problems engaging reverse could be because the gear box is already spinning. My car does it too. If you force it do you chrunch the gear, even with the clutch in? If so then try to select another gear first, like first or fourth, don't let the clutch out just select the other gear then try reverse again. That might make it easier to get reverse.

rallymad is correct, there are not syncros on the reverse gear to adjust the speed of the engine/gear to meet, so you should always keep youjr engine revs as low as possible when going in to revers, i heard a common way people have rewted there mitsubishi gear boxes, is changing in to reverse while rolling forwards or backwards, use the handbrake !! thats what its there for.
Another reason why you find gear changing problems when the car is cold, is because you have a too thin gear box oil, i used some very thin motul oil on my gear box and a month or so later i also started to get problems with my gearbox.
What gearbox oils has other people here used ?? i really reccomend everyone stays away from the motul for their fto, except for engine oil, Motul engine oil is tha bomb !

Hmmmm.

I believe the FTO is one of the few cars that does actually have a sychronmeshed reverse gear =P

I believe the workshop manual even states this from memory (5th and reverse)

Eh, I sometimes find the gearbox is harder to shift when cold. I just attribute it to the gearbox oil being cold or something like that.

Mind you my gearbox has probably been through hell and back =)

hey guys
i originally posted a msg talking abt not being able to get into third gear. thought it was a gearbox problem. Anyways i changed my clutch to a Daikin Heavy Duty and also change gear box oil. Now my problem is fix, third gear is no problem at any rev.

thanks for all the help!
