They aren't as quick as some people might think they are & handling is a bit dull.
But you get the normal euro quality finish & details. Eg; very thick double door's seals (where as lots of jap & Oz car use thin single seal), UV ray absorb windows (so you don't really need to tint it) trip computer, less road noise, & the badge factor.
Service, if you go back to VW dealer, then it will cost you an arms & legs. And if you go to other to do your service, you lose your re-sell value, & they might not able to do some of the job either, as some of the parts needed special VW tools.
I know, as at one stage I had the new Beetle, MKIV Golf & the Bora, all at the same time.

i was thinking of getting a new golf gti too.. but i was warned of vw golf's in general by a nechanic friend of mine... original parts cost an arma and a leg and he was saying they always have golfs in their garage with things broken that should last a lot longer... i think it might be the south african made ones...including the new gti...
but it reviews so well ... another thing is if youre looking for leather seats and sunroof, the options are quite expensive... youll almost be looking at 50k after a few options...
they claim that the fuel economy is pretty good...at something like 8L/100kms

Yeah the Golf & the Beetle always have minor problem here & there, but I never had any problem with the Bora. So i guess you get what you pay for.

Any suggested alternatives in terms of closest to the price range? I'm not after huge power. Small performance, cheap to run, comfy factor and 4 doors is my priority.

Since when mirage comes in 4 doors?

My advice is if you want cheap service, then look for Jap, & local cars but if you can afford it, then there are lots of euro which are similar prices to the MKIV Golf.

Yeah well sort of. The Euro's get the option of the Clio saloon (4 door) with the sport motor in it. Looks a bit pedestrian thou... Dunno if they sell 'em here - might have to import.

As James pointed out already anything in that shape is Lancer, it can be GL, GLi, GLXi, MR, GSR, Evo, 2 doors, 4 doors, 5 doors wagan.......is just plan Lancer, & we can't tell you what version is your's because we need to look at the spec of the engine & interior.
