whats the go with apexi safc's

Post by shue »

k i know what a turbo timer does. but how does an safc really help tune the engine, is it a worthwhile addition or does it pretty much just look good. i would like an after market comp but my purposes are mainly street driving and cruisin so not willin to pay heaps. whats a cheap good one to put on to get some good low down torque as thats the only think that bugs me with an fto.

Best bet is to go for a Unichip or Perfect Power SMT6 or 7. They are the best value for money with proven results. Keep in mind that you will get more from a computer, the more mods you have done... so mate get them extractors fitted quick smart!

What's a turbo timer got to do with the price of fish? :?

AFC's simply allow you to change the air/fuel mix. Basically you can lean out or richen up the mixture which can result in more power or more protection for the engine. You really need to dyno tune these things to get maximum result and it would be advisable to have your exhaust and CAI done to get maximum benefit.

The SAFC II should give you around 6-8kW with the right mods and tunning

I bought a second hand Type A Unichip for $500 & it cost me $150 to have it installed & tuned. Picked up 11Kw - keep in mind I have a lot of other mods including extractors & air intakes...

I have heard of people getting the SMT6 installed (brand new) & tuned for $1000.

$150 for installed & tuned? I guess you get along with your mechanic very well. It cost me $500 when i did mine, but i did went to an authorise unichip dealer.

Yeah, he's more of a mate than my mechanic - only charges me cost.
But $500 sounds about right from what I hear as well.

I've got a wide band lambda and display with a vafc2 and it's great being able to tune set up your fuelling accurately whenever you want, but the best bit about the vafc 2 is it's got a light that changes from green to red when you hit mivec 8)

I found mine was running quite rich actually before the vafc and that's with headers/extractors,pod filter, cai, bored t/b etc etc
