I personally think that something like this is better, as it is further away from the hot engine

call S-Rally 02 9683 5880 tell em Jiwan sent ya, ask for Christian if he is there.

There is an issue with GRs because of the MAP sensor or something.. it's kind of vague in my head right now... i think RPW have a kit for GRs, at least you can get an idea from them as for what to do, I have heard from past customers of their CAI kit, that it was not very well made or hard to put on yourself.. or something along those lines...

The K&N pod filter that RPW sells sits in the same spot as in the picture (replaces the airbox) - however it is a more of an oval shaped filter.

RPW has said that this is needed on the GRs due to the normal round sort of filters causing turbulence in the Mass Airflow unit.

The RPW kit comes easy to fit with an adaptor that bolts right up to the MAF sensor - however, the only thing I guess people don't like about the kit is that it does not really come a good set of brackets to hold the piping/filter in place. Essentially the original airbox bolts onto the mass airflow sensor and holds that and the piping in place - the podfilter replaces the airbox (and therefore there is nothing to hold the other end).

All mine came with was two strips of galvanised tin that you can bend and screw down - they do the job, but don't look all that pretty. Of course there is nothing wrong with making your own sort of brackets.

i'm sure Simota should have something that'll adapt... and as for the K&N, Boney has a kit fitted to his GPX and the piping is similar to SBE8888's, only longer and as such it absorbs a lot of the engine heat... looks neat and all, but not a very good design in practice.

...and yes, correct me if i'm wrong but i think only the GR has a MAP sensor fitted to the intake so perhaps this should be taken into consideration also.

The GR has a mass airflow sensor (maf or mas) attached to the air filter box/ air intake tube.
The GPX has a MAP (air pressure) which is not near the air filter box.

I am also looking at an Induction kit, i think simota make kits similar to g1's but take the filter down near the stock filter. I am currently looking for a nice shinny metal one and k&n filter.
Though I have seen that the HKS kits are actually not much more at perfect run, and they say that includes an induction kit, but im not sure where the filter ends up after the kit is adapted. Anyone have one hte the hks induction kits ??

Gav, I'm pretty sure the HKS induction kit ends up at where the stock air filter box is. Well, this is the case for GPXs anyway, and I don't see why it would be different for a GR.

To date, I have only come across 2 brands that make a replacement induction tubing (to replace the OEM rubber ones). They are ARC and the one you had pictured in the other message thread from Funky Products in the UK. In terms of bolt-on air filter kits alone, Apexi and HKS are the leading brands.

The tricky thing with the GRs is the MAF sensor so these induction piping is not going to be common. I guess you could try brands that have induction piping for the Lancer MRs and try to fabricate it to fit your car. These cars have MAF sensors too. Not sure how effective this is going to be for the FTO though. I'm just guessing here because the size of the intake could very well be different, so don't quote me on it!

Personally I don't know how much improvement you are going to get by replacing the rubber induction piping. I reckon you should get the HKS kit and fabricate a CAI yourself from the front of your car (along with a heat shield). Either that, or get a ARC Super Induction Box (on the pricey side but). That's what I would do!

Isn't it that the point of CAI though? Running the pipe to direct air flow from the front of the car ie. front bumper grill?

I think Stephen M - the moderator has a setup like this with the 02 Rush filter and heat shield with CAI. He may be able to shed some light on a setup like his.
