questions from new fto owner=)

Post by ftoboi »

hi everyone,
i've just bought a 95 GPX recently, and i must say this website is bloody helpful, nice to know there's so many FTO owner's helping each other out!
The car's beautiful and is in good nick, couple of minor problems here and there but no biggy. its pretty stock except for the apexi n1 catback and 17" rims, plus some white dials. Just wanna ask, i know that mivec should kick in around 5500rpm.... i've read ppl stating it sounds very pronounced and powerful when it does, yet i can't hear much of a difference?!? is there anything that can cause the mivec to cock up and not kick in? or do i need a hearing aid =) ( i don't think so)

are you sure it is a Mivec motor which side of the engine is the oil filler cap

On the mivec motor it will be on the drivers side on a non mivec motor it will be on the passenger side

mivec

Post by elmo »

you will definately hear a different exhaust note when mivec kicks in, sorta like going from a four cylinder to a V8. If i'm allowed to say that.

I've heard that if the cam timing belts are installed wrong, (one tooth out), this will make the mivec not work but the engine will compensate and it will still run OK.

Anyway, what danny said is probably right, its prob a non mivec, which means it is not a gpx.. sorry dude....

Best way to tell, go through the old posts, theres one about body codes etc, check yours against it and it will tell you if you have GPX and MIVEC.
Apparently there are a few dressed up non GPX around.

Good luck.
Might be another one for the dodgy list

1 easy way to tell if it's a GPX would be the cam cover in the engine bay... If it says 'MIVEC' on the cam cover, then it is a GPX.

also the engine will not rev to 8000rpm if it's cold... if you cannot hear the MIVEC kicking in, could it be that your exhaust is too loud?? :P

best way to put the sound of MIVEC into perspective is to make an audio recording on your engine revving to 6000rpm, then replay it halfway at 1.5x speed... that sudden change in tone is about as close as it will get to the sound of MIVEC kicking in... short of a real drive on a GPX or playing GT3 on PS2, i really dunno how else to put it! :?

Hi again,
yeah, i've checked the chassis no. before and from what the plate says its a gpx. plus the oil filler is on the left and the engine cover has MIVEC written in big chunky letters... So Elmo, definitely not one for the dodgy list :) unless they did a really good job disguising it. I had a resonator fitted to my exhaust cos the apexi was starting to piss me off man...
i've also heard about the cam belt causing problems, not too sure if thats the problem. I'll be getting it replaced soon anyway after my next service, by crockenberg motors, the local mitsubishi specialist in perth.
well demonjay, at least u r not the only one with this problem
cheers

u can normally tell the change over point of by revving in neutral and it hits mivec about 5500rpm!! :)

mine have been kicking over to MIVEC pretty late sometimes (approx 6000rpm)...but i guess it depends on the engine temperature as well i guess... i've redlined it several times since i've owned it and in all that time i can hear it kicking in... so yeah, i'd get the cambelts etc etc checked.

come to think of it, this one time i gunned it like crazy and overtook a whole bunch of cars, i think i felt the mivec kick in, kinda abit like a turbo charged feeling...if only i had the stereo down a notch, probably woulda heard something on that occasion :D oh well, if my bitch is only giving me pleasure once or twice since i've owned it (about a month), better take it in for the major service sooner than expected. the previous owner didn't take much care of it...it was a lady owner (hehe, no offence to all the talented ladies out there who know their sh*t)

well the sudden rush/surge is not as dramatic as a turbo, but you sure can feel a subtle shove from the back when MIVEC kicks in... (if it's working that is).

...and since when does anybody drive at redline with their stereo on?? LOL... J/K! :)

You can tell when the mivec kicks in under heavy acceleration, especially in the wet.....feel those tyres slipping :)

or maybe i just need new tyres ;)

mivec

Post by elmo »

If you have ever driven a two stroke honda odessy or trail bike then you will know what we mean. The mivec is like a power band, well i guees it is a power band just not the same type as a two stroke.

FTOBOI you said you were in Perth? Take me for a drive and I will tell you if it is working properly. I live in Belmont.

BTW, the RPW extractors made the MIVEC kick in a lot less pronounced, because of the deeper bore exhaust, the note change is a lot less now. I've just got stock exhaust with the extractors and have noticed it, so if you got big bore, loud exhaust it might not be distinct either.
Also been told by Honda Mechanic that V-tec need a lot of back pressure down low and a too free flowing exhaust will not make it work right.

AND... I think it all works off oil pressure so if you got the wrong oil in her it might fock it too.

rush

Post by elmo »

Try only using the first three gears and redlining in between changes.
Guess you wouldn't get much rush if not going all the way.

ok i lied

Post by elmo »

OK dude I lied. I live right in the corner of orrong and GT eastern.
Radar detectors are a good thing but none of us speed.
Think theres 7 sets of lights.
If your mivec is working you should be ok.
Heard once that if you stay above 140km/h you will get every green light.(but none of us speed)
Bet you drive the white one with the D'cuarto skirts I've seen heaps lately???
