Problems with GPX gearbox (manual)

Post by MIVEC_GPX »

hey guys,
im having a bit of trouble with my gearbox....
i always warm my car up before driving but i find that for the first 15 mins or so of driving i have trouble gearing down to 2nd gear and some trouble with gearing down to 3rd....after about 15 mins or so the trouble goes away. the problem with 3rd gear goes away completely, but 2nd gear is still a little hard to gear down to even after 30 mins of driving...
ive only had the FTO for about a month (i really love it though :D ) and im just wondering if this is just common with FTO's or am i in a bit of trouble here...

cheers

Is your gearbox a tiptronic or a manual?

Changing gearbo oil to something like Caltex Syntrax or Redline or even Motul should fix most things like that...

[EDIT} Oh.. now i c it's a manual... yeah try changing the oil in it to a quality oil. Such as the above... that's my suggestion anyway

i'd agree with boris though i suspect it could be one of two things - either your synchros have worn out or you are not using the right gearbox oil.

do not use motul gearbox oil in manual ftos, I had no trouble with my gearbox until i put motul gearbox oil in, but then i changed to reddex, and its the best stuff ever made

I think youl need like 2.2 lts for the oil change

i think redline goes for about $113 for 3.78 lts

castrol syntrax is also a good alternative( $64 3.0lts) ive been using it for my last two gbox oil changes, i havent really had the need to try redline as my gbox feels fine with syntrax.

For a manual has any one had any problems where at about 1200rpm~ 2200rpm their gearbox makes a lot of noise like a grinding noise type?
I already changed mine to a redline but still the same.
Also, I had my clutch changed about a year ago and this was always there as well. but straight after the clutch change it was great. No noise at all then after about a month or so it came back again.

So not sure what the problem is here.

I hope I don't have to change my gearbox!

when you replaced the clutch, did you machine the flywheel ?

Hi GAV,
Yeah my flywheel was machined when I changed the clutch, but the thing is even before the clutch change this noise was always there.

Some a while back told me that it might be the bushes in the gearbox that's worn out and I'd need to replace those.
Just don't know if that is the problem and it's not even a cheap job either.

Thanks,

I test drove an fto today that had the same problem. It would go into 2nd when taking it easy but if you got the revs up and tryed to change from 1st to 2nd it wouldnt go into gear. Also had the same going from 3rd to 4th.

Does this sound like the same problem stated above or should I steer clear?
