CAPA Superchargers

Post by NorthQLDFTO »

Okay Okay! I know the whole Turbo/Supercharger thing has been done a million times on this site...But hell, I haven't had my shot at it yet so you can all blow it out your preverbials! :D I contacted CAPA a few days ago regarding Supercharging a FTO (out of sheer curiosity!) and the reply I got was quite favourable...The CAPA reply was that there are 2 superchargers that they stock that would be suitable for the FTO - The 'Eaton M-62' or the 'Vortech V-5' units...I must say that my curiosity has been fed & I am now looking into this avenue...Particularily involving the 'Eaton M-62'...Here's the write up from CAPA on this unit...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Eaton Model 62 supercharger was engineered for 2.0L to 4.0L passenger cars and light truck engines. It was designed as a compact, flexible supercharger for increased power without adversely affecting fuel economy. The M62 has proven to be suitable for other engine sizes depending on overall system requirements.
~Most installations see a realistic 40% plus increase in power output.
~Eaton Superchargers will work effectively in any orientation (Flat, upside down, on edge).
~Different length drives are available, giving the custom installer flexibility in the placement of the supercharger.
~The M62 is available for counter rotating engines (2 Piece Drive).
~A Bypass Valve is included with every supercharger, two different Bypass Valves are available, one that mounts directly on the intake port, and one for remote mount.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And with the 'Eaton M-62' (IV Generation) being priced @ $2,900.00 this sounds like it might be a viable & worthwhile modification to look into...I am making my own enquiries but I was wondering if anyone out there who has a bit more knowledge in the engine field would care to share their thoughts on this topic?
If I Had A Dollar For Every Time Someone Said "If I Had A Dollar For Every Time Someone Said <...>" Well... Then... I'd... Have A Dollar For Every Time Somone Said "If I Had A Dollar For Every Time Someone Said <...>"!!!

I contact them ages ago, & they gave me the same details, but when i send them a second email asking how reliable is the supercharge on a 6A12, i never got a reply. I did a post somewhere, maybe you would like to dig it up.

RPW did a few supercharged FTO, they all end up will blow motor. 8O

Hey folks,
Im quietly performing a similar job on my FTO. I don't want to give too many details away just yet (as it may just blow up when I get it back!)
but I've purchased a similar unit from Sprintex and am fitting it as we
speak. Im only putting a mild poundage through it at the moment - which is goverened by the chargers pulley sizes. We guestimating a safe increase of about 20% on what I've already got before computer mods need to be made to compensate for the extra air going in. Most expensive part is having to modify the bonnet to fit the thing in! Will keep you posted...

I have a Eaton M-45 sitting in the garage. This unit is designed for 2-3lt engines, a model down from M-62

I was always thinking to get rid of A/C or P/S to put the supercharger in, however, never got in to that point.

From the eaton's web, it seems that M-62 is designed for engines 2,5-4 lts capacity, so, I think too big for 2lt FTO engine.

i'm guessing it could be a very tight squeeze coz as you might be awrae, there is fark-all space between the suspension towers and the timing belts on the engine...

$2.9K might sound cheap for a supercharger, but don't forget all the other bits required like intercoolers, cooler pipes (which has to be custom-fabricated), additional / bigger injectors, computer, dyno time etc etc... even hoses & fittings. they all add up so if you're getting it done through a workshop, expect t pay close to $6K-7K all up (if not more)

oh and also, although superchargers give you very good torque downlow, they are quite hard on the gearbox but I wouldn't expect any issues with it until you reach the 350 - 400hp mark....

I wrote an email to CAPA asking if they would make a supercharge kit for the FTO that would be affordable.

They said if they could see 10-20kits being sold then yes they would but they have never had any real demands for them, so ca not justify the R&D costs.

The supercharger Im bolting on was originally sized up by sprintex on thier web site:

http://www.sprintex.com.au/BlowerCalcul ... ulator.xls

Then after a couple of confirmation phone calls I was away.
Im doing most of the piping fabrication, a custom crank pulley
is being made with a second drive gear welded on, and a number
of things had to moved including the engine mount & air con lines.

And yes, Ive had to upgrade a number of other things to cope with
the extra power - fuel pump & regulator, injectors, fuel rails & clutch
just to be safe. So youd be about right with a 6-7K price tag if done
by a shop...

I'll be attempting to blueprint what I can. :)

I think a 2nd hand unit may the way to go at a fraction of the price.

What about Jacksons Racing superchargers?

Also, these remours about RPW supercharging V6 MIVEC's and ending up with a blown engine, where did this come from? I read it a few times but wondering if it's just rumours floating around???

Yep, Jacksons do make units that would be suitable - albeit more specialized toward Honda engines - but they are about $3500 US - then ya gotta pay freight.

All in all, as long as your happy with the the units overall size - you can adapt just about any on-board pulley supercharger you like. I've seen a supercharged Integra with the unit out of the 3.6 ltr supercharged commodore. You just have to work out pulley sizes vs poundage, then your fit, then your pipes. Here's one that was on ebay....

Funnily enough - for a Mitsubishi too!
