Which FTO model do I have? Is it dodgy?

Post by Rusty12 »

I own a 95 (built in 95, complied in 97) FTO, and I am unsure of which model it is.

It has the 4 cylinder, 1.8 litre engine (which made me think it was a GS). However, it has a standard GPX spoiler (not Aero kit spoiler, which is the only one you can have added as an extra), the nice bucket seats, and automatic air conditioning etc (it has everything the GPX has inside). The airconditioning has outside temperature reading, automatic climate control, and LCD panel. The other thing that is strange is that the front fog lights are from the GS kit (the round ovals) as apposed to the twin circle lights found on the GPX kits (I dont know exactly what they are called).

Do you guys have any idea of which it is? It doesn't have any kind of badging on it at all a part from the engraved FTO logo on the right, and the Mitsubishi sticker on the left. I have been told its the GS with all the trimmings.

any pics?

if it doesn't have a cam cover with the word MIVEC embossed on it, then chances are it's a GR... but like you said, since it's only 180cc then it's definitely a GS (same engine as the Lancer), albeit fully optioned by the amount of equipment that came with it...

Is that possible to order a GS with all the trimmings though? I didn't think you could do that.

No, no Mivec sticker, but no badging on the back either.

I though they had 'GPX, GS, GR' stickers etc on them.

the previous owner in Japan may have ordered the FTO GS with all the fruit and debadged the car himself... it's not very hard to remove the stickers from the body... maybe the previous owner was ashamed of having a GS sticker on his car??? ;)

Another way to tell is to look at the chassis number.
Look at the last 4 letters (eg. HNGH).
1st letter is body shape spec: H=2 door coupe.
2nd letter is gear box type: Y=5 speed tip-auto, R=4 speed tip-auto, N=5 speed manual.
3rd letter is equipment usage info: U=GS, H=GR, G=GPX, X=GX, F=GP.
4th letter is engine spec level: E=4G93 1.8L 16v with electronic fuel injection, M=6A12 DOHC V6 with electronic fuel injection, H=6A12 MIVEC Engine DOHC V6 with electronic fuel injection and MIVEC.

Hence a 5-speed tip GPX would have this code: HYGH

If yours is a GS, then it would have UE on the end.

Hope that helps.

and the thing with the fog lights....
the earlier models came out with the oval lights and the post 97 batch had the twin round ones. regardless of model.

It has the 4 cylinder, 1.8 litre engine (which made me think it was a GS).
On the flip-side, if it is indeed a GS, you will have the 4G93 lancer engine, which means it will be very easy to find standard parts as well as aftermarket parts such as turbo kits.
