Replace belts, $600 ???

Post by spastic »

Hey all,

Can I get some of yours feedback about this. A trusted mechanic is asking $600 to replace my cam and accessory belts. Seems extremely overpriced to me.

He's sourcing the cambelt from Mitsu, which he reckons is $300, about $40 for the accessories belt and the rest in labour.

I phoned Gates, who won't supply directly, but supply to Repco. Repco don't have a belt listed for the 6A12 engine, but *might* be able to source it from Gates.. will take about 3 weeks! When I called Mitsu parts they said they had 2 different belts listed for the 6A12, but would need to order from overseas, so I don't know what the mechanic has sourced.

He's doing it the work now, so I'm going to have to fork out regardless (need car back). Just wondering what the rest of you think about this?

Kev,

How much did you pay to have your Cam belt changed?

cam belt you should get under $200 though fitting it is fairly labour intensive, so it will cost a bit

yeah i bought the cambelt from sydney (i'm in brisbane) and it costed $120 for a DAYCO brand... which isn't too bad i guess...... and labour costed $200 to fit cambelt from Nihon Car Parts on the Gold Coast.

Hey guys if any of you are confused which Gates timing belt goes on which car (GR or GPX) here they are:

D179620 is for Mitsubishi FTO 6A12 (2.0L V6) Belt is T954, 226 tooth x 30 mm width

MD211195 is for Mitsubishi FTO 6A12 (2.0L V6 MIVEC) Belt is T987, 232 tooth x 30mm width

should put this thread in the info section of something.

Ring around for prices?
