Car preparations before going to the RUNS

Post by lal »

Hi All,

As Sydney siders may have seen, GAV is trying to set up a night were the FTOs can go to Eastern Creek and have some runs 8)

If you're interested, state your interest here or the state board.

Anyways, back to my question.

If I take my car to the runs, what can I do to give me the best possible chance to help get good times. Without doing mods =)

I have a stocky and have never been to the runs, I don't trash my baby, but I do want to know how she compares to other FTOs 8)

Some questions I have are:
1. Is there an optimal psi the tyres should be inflated to when doing 1/4 mile?
2. Does octane boosters work? should it be added to a ful tank or half filled?
3. maybe go to the runs with 1/4 full tank so it's a bit ligther?
4. is stock air filter better than pod filter with no CAI?
5. best rev level to launch?

so I'm looking for simple tips to help get the possible time. From experienced ppl and others who has some ideas.

cheers! 8)

well you will have to empty out everything in your boot... you might as well take out your back seats as well ;)

octane boost will only work if you do an ecu reset... fill up to desired level add octane boost... drive for 5 minutes (at least) to make sure its mixed... unplug battery wait ... 30-40 minutes... plug battery in... drive car to drags...

launch at well whatever rev's you can get traction at without tooo much wheel spin (this will vary depending on tyres and rim width)... if tip... stall it as high as you can and let it go... on the green light

for the run take out your air filter... (its only 400ms ) if your game... it performs best

psi... no idea don't do runs only track work

1.This really depends on the type of tyres u running, sizes and profile of the tyres. I set mine 20psi (normal street tyres 205-50-16) some people would set them as low as 18psi depending on the front weight of the car. The heavier the front the higher the psi should be, lighter front is best set at lowest possible psi.
2.First, you gotta understand that in racing world - you gotta choose the fuel that has got the highest octane rating that will burn quicker. No point adding octane booster if doesnt get burn quick enuff. I have personally made comparison between SHELL OPTIMAX, BP ULTIMATE & MOBIL SYNERGY - they are all rated 98 Octane but so far MOBIL SYNERGY get burnt quicker than the other 2.
3.Well, less amount of fuel is preferable but u gotta make sure that you have back up fuel incase u run out.
4.Quarter mile will make use of your cars TOP END power - so the answer is obvious, POD filter is always good for 1/4 mile but as smorison said - open filter always work well and it is highly advisable.
5.Using street tyres, I suggest you launch at 3.5K RPM - it is better to get the wheel spins than hop.

But then again. drivers have different style of preparations to 1/4. So yeah, as the pro always say - Practice is the key to success :)

even if I don't have a CAI setup? it's better to have a pod filter? so sucking hotter air than usual won't have too much effect vs. gains from sucking more air?

also, when you say open filter, do you guys mean, NO AIR FILTER, box and all 8O

is there much gain (gain in time) having an open filter vs. just a pod, that ppl will risk the car sucking dirt straight to the engine 8O
does the gain outweight the risk.. ??

they normally sucks hot air on low speed and they tend to go colder as u drive faster. regardless whether u have CAI or just simply the stock box. Stock box usually works better on street driving coz it eliminates hot air from being sucked from inside d engine bay. But if u have a pod filter n dont have cold air feed then it'd end up sucking more hot air than usual.

NO AIR FILTER - u can eaither leave the box or take it it off as u wish. Taking d headlight off during runz is a perfect way of feeding the intake with cold fresh air.

It is highly unlikely that theres going to be some dirts on d drag strip (they are always kept clean and free of anything that can cause damage, accident etc etc). But then again, there's always a slight chance that there is some risk by doing so.[/i]

1) top up your oil levels (and make sure it's the good sh*t)

2) run with decent tyres, like semi slicks etc (even if it means running on 16" rims)

3) get rid of the subs/amp/wheel-jacks/map books/condoms etc... the more weight you can strip out of the car, the better

4) run the car on qtr tank full (too little and your engine goes bang, too much and your car will be heavier)

5) Fit stockings over the inlet pipe (replace the filter)

6) practice your launch techniques and make sure you have the right hardware to cope (nothingmore embarassing than a burning clutch or busted driveshaft before you go over the 60-foot LoL)

i'll add more later as I cbf'd right now...
