Bonnets Vents: Are they useful?

Hey there,

I'm looking at getting a carbon fibre bonnet from carmate.com. The AB Style they have there has peaked my interest. Anyone with this bonnet tell me if the vents are actually useful for heat removal? If i was to pore water on the bonnet, would it fall into the engine bay? If my car is outside when it rains, would the water that passes through damage anything in my engine bay?

Do u know how much they are?
I thought i heard (read) that a few of the boys (and girls) on here dont like carmate that much, whys that?
are their product crapy???
or should we just stick to UAS if they still have this bonnet?

I would guess the price would be in the vicinity of $1200. Thats only a guess... i'm probably way off.

Not sure why anyone would hate them... they have a great selection there and i've had friends purchase products without any problems so far.
I have a feeling the UAS bonnet comes from the same manufacturer... so they mustn't be that bad.

From memory people have had issues with various body kit parts from carmate not fitting properly. But if you use the search you'll be able to find out exactly what it was

jsut to clear things up a bit
u guys mite think i am biased but ok
i asked where UAS has their bonnets sourced from, they said taiwan
SAME as carmate
VERY POSIBBLE from same suppiler
i saw quality of carmate its good
note that most rice parts come from taiwan nowdayz
anywayz i got a deal for carbon ab style from carmate for 950 !

the vents shouldnt let the water threw if it was good qualty My cozzin has a EVO8 and the bonnet has a vent too.. the water cant get threw to the engine because they have some disign on the vents that cant let it in.
the vents also steam when the engine is on to let out the hot air from the engine.

With the Evo 8, Mitsubishi would have spent a fortune in development costs. The amount of thought about insuring that the bonnet works in the most efficient manner possible would be enormous.

I don't think that the manufacters of this bonnet would have gone to that level of effort. I am interested about whether the vents would provide some kind of increase in engine heat dispersion. Would my GPX actually produce enough heat to care about this?

sure sometimes your engine gets abit hotter than usual
but it takes less than one minute for the fan to cool it down
vents will not help NA

i think it depends on how the vent is designed. my understanding is that a proper design will create a vacuum above the vent as air rushes over the top of the bonnet forcing air thru the engine bay and out the vent... in theory it should keep the engine bay temperature lower than normal... how much of a temperature difference itll make is anyones guess but surely decreasing the engine bay air temp will yield benefits... if it doesnt affect the intake temp, even just keeping the engine slightly cooler on any car could make a difference ... thats just my opinion...

having said that, i could think of better ways to spend $1,000 on increasing the performance of the car in general, let alone the engine

I wouldn't consider a vented bonnet as a performance mod. More for looks than anything else. I don't think the makers of those bonnets would've put a lot of thought into how engine heat dissipates in an FTO. But I must say I like the idea of having a lighter-weight bonnet.

Yeah, i like the idea of a light weight bonnet too.
I am planning to get a carbon bonnet, i was just wondering if one to have vents would create a heat reduction effect.

Took off the stock bonnet today... damn heavy! Awkward to carry too.

Is it illegal to drive around without a bonnet? I'm too slack to put it back on at the moment...

if u dont have a bonnet and drive around
if it rains your in trouble
and many dust will get in your engine bay meaning not good for your engine either

To be blunt, there is virtually no "performance" reason for buying a bonnet like this for the FTO. The weight issues and venting issues will have neglible impact on the performance of the car.

Quite simply, it's just about looks

fto617, I had a look... i'll think about it...

My gpx isn't my daily car.... can't afford the insurance to make it my daily driver. I'm going out later so i'll put the bonnet back on before i leave.

I always have liked the kind of rice look... i know you hardcore performance junkies out there don't like it... but a nice looking car is just as important as it is to go fast! IMOP that is...

well actually the ab style design well i THINK
helps the CAI as it allows cool air from outside the engine bay rush in through the 2 tiny vents on the side
what i think would happen is that the cool air rushes in through the2 sides and the hot air escapes through the middle vent
but as ruchi pointed out its not much help
lets just keep it just for that ricey look

but i do think it would help with CAI

Huh? This bonnet has nothing to do with CAI.

CAI = Cold Air Intake - i.e. it is ducted piping that feeds cold air directly to your air filter (intake).

If you don't have any direct feed of cold air to your air filter, you don't have a CAI.

A vented bonnet MAY lower the ambient air temperature under the bonnet, but this has nothing to do with CAI.

I think he was referring to having a cold air feed from the location where the passenger headlight normally would be....nothing to do with the bonnet.

This is a common sight on the track.
