Is it common for GPX to blow head gasket / loose compression

Post by NextLevel »

Took my GPX Mivec FTO out for a 20mins ride this morning at 6am.
Took it to redline a few times on the freeway first and second gears.
Then went back home, parked it. it was fine.

Later at 6pm, went to start the car and it felt like it had lost compression on idle.
Car was struggling to idle and would often stall.
Also there was a strange clunking sound coming from within the motor which kinda comes and goes.

After awhile of putting my foot down on the gas peddle and maintaining idle at 1500rpm, the car is able to maintain idle on its own. (car temp guage is now at the middle, and motor is at ideal operative temp).

The Clunking sound is pretty much non-audible at idle (after warm up), but can be heard sometimes when revs reached 3000rpm while driving.

I have check the coolant for bubbles at idle, but none can be seen.

Engine oil looks normal and free coolant contaminate.

Is it common for Mivec motors to blown their head gasket? Or is something mechanical which has failed with the motor?

Your opinion and experience will be greatly appreciated? Cheers

Crappy idle could be coming from a crappy stepper motor. Did your temp guage ever spike?

I have a mivec engine which had a blown head gasket that I'm rebuilding for a project so I guess it does happen, but I doubt it would just randomly go bang.
I fix cars.

A audio clip of the noise will help with diagnosing the problem.

the stepper motor was recently replaced, and i believe it is what has been keeping the motor idling after the car has warmed up.

also, i have been using BP 98 ron on the FTO (I can actually feel the benfits).

I would definitely not recommend 'limiter bashing' the car to try and solve a problem...

LOL @ Sahin.

Didnt get a chance to do a vid, but was wondering if the coils was the issue?

I can still hit MIVEC without any problems.

7,500-8000rpm on 1st and 2nd gears. Pointless to hit MIVEC on the remaining gears.

Get the f**k outta here.

Meanwhile, sounds like something very simple given it's affecting idle and nothing else by the seems.

As mentioned prior, stepper motor. It's possible you have a leak somewhere, or simply a bad stepper entirely, it's not unusual.

P.S. You haven't blown a gasket; as you have no symptoms of such.

Seriously, i havent hit mivec on 3rd.
Mivec on 2nd gets me a little over 100km which is fast enough for me.
The way i see it, i could get my licence suspended on 2nd gear alone lol

Hmmmm, or am i one of the few whimpy FTO owners here lol

would a semi faulty ignition coil throw up an error code?
