shock absorbers

Post by Chiangstar »

does anyone know why some shock absorbers extend when theyre not under load and why some dont? what i mean is, when you compress the damper, some dampers push back out by themselves and some dont push back out, they just stay there and are hard to move....

they all push back out when the load is taken off it. Its just what they are rated at.

Imagine if they dont spring back, pretty dodgy set of shocks dont you think.

ive seen ones that dont, it just means the gas is out or low. but this doesnt necessarily mean that the shocks are no good. they will still do their job (dampening, which is what the oil does) and the spring will push them back out anyway.

this is what a suspension mechanic told me anyway, that you dont neccesarily have to regas some types of shocks as they will still do their dampening job albeit my guess is the pressure is lost a little so the dampening will become a little softer, but i noticed that it's still damn hard to push the piston down anyway... or maybe the gas just ensures that the oil stays down at the bottom of the chamber so that around corners the oil does not move around too much... in any case from what the mechanic told me it doesnt make a huge difference
