Just wondering how things are going with it? Any updates ?

There's actually 3 different way to modify your ECU,
1. Solider an addional pre-set computer chip.
2. Change your ECU completely which most company just solider their own version of pre-set chip & then rebadge it. eg Mines VX ROM (Japan)
3. Add an programmable computer (piggyback) to your existing ECU.
The best option would be the 3rd one, because it can be re-program as you add more modification to your car, but of course its going to cost you every time as well.

PowerChip, UniChip, Motech, Modtech, Microtech..........etc
I can't recommend a dealer or a brand to you cause they all charge different prices & depends what kind of mod you got already & what setting you going to have, as tuning takes time.
That goes for the gain as well, cause there's no one formula for performance mod gain. So it has to work on individual case.

I'm in the process of re-installing the Unichip, but having so much problem, even APS (the maker of Unichip) couldn't figure it out yet. DAMIT
But they said they going to reply me soon.
So let this be warn for everyone who try to install a "piggyback" ECU.

hey barfy, you should talk to someone local. like the guys at RPM. they would be able to give you an idea of cost and performance for a few different options. im sure they could tell you all the technical aspects of what ECU/chip would work best with your modifications. AFAIK they did the turbo conversion on EXC's car so if thats what you want to do then you should definately call or visit them.

Ok just called RPM couldnt really help with the chip side of thing but found out that EXC had her turbo conversion done there... Got a quote from them while i was on the phone and it will be about $8 to $9K so i guess its time to save my $$ or go for a loan haha
If i dont get the turbo ill look at the unichip from morpowa .... Maybe we can get a group but happening, as all of us SA ppl live around the modbury area

Barfy,
I had a unichip fitted. 94 Gr Tip. Went from 76kw to 86 kw. See other discussion on this thread.
The people I used had not done an FTO before, but not a problem, as long as they can get a wiring diagram for your model most cars are the same.
The reason you get an increase, even though the FTO is a highly tuned car is;
Out of the factory they tune the cars for low octane fuel. This is because if you tune to 102 ron then run on 92 ron you can get detonation which is dangerous. If you tune to 92ron then no problems. By using a post market chip, and any other breathing mods, they can tune your car full of 98ron (Aust best), to its peak potential. Slightly advanced timing, matched fuel/air ratio, etc.

I fully agree with this statement for cars sold in Australia but not those sold in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) which are then imported to Australia.Jeff wrote:The reason you get an increase, even though the FTO is a highly tuned car is;

Rather than giving my own personal opinion, let me quote straight from the horses mouth (Mitsubishi), as per Joel's correspondance with his contacts at head office:
Black_FTOGPX wrote:What is the minimum rating(92/95/98/100) of petrol suitable for use on
all grades of FTOs?
For 1.8L S4 MPI: 92 octane
For 2.0L V6 D4 MPI: 98 octane
For 2.0L V6 D4 MIVEC MPI: 100 octane
(2) Will the usage of a lower octane petrol result in poor economy and lack
of power/response
Yes
(3) On detecting pre-ignition, does the FTO's engine ECU simply retard
timing for a few seconds, or does it fully switch over to a low quality
fuel timing arrangement?
Ignition timing retard type
If how long before the engine ECU will again attempt to advance the timing
back to "good quality fuel" mode?
Ignition timing retard cancelation may require more than 100
kilometers drive
MIVEC is My Friend :D
